A Light Divided
A Light Divided were put onto the site thanks to Damon at The Inner Light Agency. All the music I’ve heard from over in that direction has been awesome so far, so I was looking forward to this! This was secured even more when I saw the description of the bands music as Metal, Rock, Punk Pop – this has to be a good combo! Add to this their already impressive list of bands they’ve supported and this is a band you need to check out.
One Shot You Don’t Want To Miss opens proceedings you’re immediately confronted by roaring guitars pinned down with female vocals and pounding drums all combined together to form a catchy and accessible track. Keeping the guitars chunky and the drums rolling, the vocals lead the journey through this track, sounding dark at times but always retaining that catchy edge which makes it so easy to listen to. What’s really striking here is the vocals, they’re absolutely stunning! Add to the vocals the solid guitars, bass and drums and what you’ve got is a band on the verge of something pretty big! Throwing in lead lines behind the vocals and adding in contrasting roars only helps to further develop this track making it one hell of a way to be introduced to a band!
The Only Thing I’m Guilty of is Bad Taste follows on, opening in much the same way with pounding drums and roaring guitars, immediately setting the pace high. Bringing in those vocals once again, every thing fades at first to allow you to fully take it in, then powers onwards again. There’s another catchy edge to this track, linking this to the pop style of music but retaining that metal edge through the riffs and drums throughout. Keeping the pace going throughout the track, the guitar work here really shows the bands ability to write a solid track without compromising on the individual instruments input, there’s a lot going on but you can hear it all. As the track fades and What Doesn’t Kill You fades into being you’re confronted with a much more harmonic start, building up into the soaring main section. Layering the pounding drums and intricate lead line together the band create a sound which you almost think you’ve heard before, it’s polished and well put together but keeps that raw edge you want to hear from a band. Again, the vocals steal the show on this track, once again soaring to stunning heights and really adding in a depth which can so often be left out of a track.
To Catch A Bullet returns to the pounding drum and guitar intro before descending into a fully fledged metal riff, what a start. Keeping the lines going behind the vocals, this is a much rawer and dirty approach to music, one which seems to suit the style of the band and works really well. Once again catchy during the chorus, this track is probably my favourite from the selection on their Facebook, it just has a lot of elements combining to make it into a massive track, one where everything is right there. I’ve said it before but I love it when you can hear the bass, and this is another one of those tracks, it keeps it deep and interesting throughout. As it fades and Creating a Tragedy kicks in, everything takes a less produced sound and becomes more like I imagine these guys are live. The guitars sound exquisite here, really taking on a tone befitting of the band you’re listening to. Layering up the instruments once again so that every element can be heard, this track has to be a live anthem, it sounds like it will have every single person in the room singing along with the band – what a way to finish!
In all, A Light Divided have been a revelation of sorts. I’m not sure I agree with their description of their music as I can’t help but feel they’re underselling themselves. Normally, when I see pop thrown into the mix I get a little put off, but these guys are nothing like I expected. Raw and edgy throughout their tracks, they’ve managed to group together some musicians who work exceedingly well together and write tracks which are bound to be a success – bravo!
