A Wretched Betrayal
Milwaukee based A Wretched Betrayal say that they’re prepared to bring a full on metal assault to the ears of any and all who will listen….so here we go! Renowned for their intense live shows, this promises to be something pretty damned full on I suspect.
Opening with Of Heights and Mortality you’re immediately thrown head first into a melding pot of pure downright dirty metal and downtuned guitar breaks – it’s pretty intense. Rolling drums add pace to the track whilst keeping it steady and to the point, all the time the guttural vocals taking the over all lead on proceedings and forcing you to pay attention. The guitar work on this track is excellent from the outset, throwing both heavy riffs and clearly well developed lead lines into the mix to make sure that you’re still there, still on board and paying full attention. Adding in gang vocals later in the track adds yet another dimension to the track, almost comedic at one point but over all getting the point across that they’re here and they’re damned heavy.
Destroyer adds more the intriguing mix from these guys, adding in some almost Primus like guitar lines whilst powering on with those insane riffs, the mix created is both heavy and confusing at the same time but works incredibly well. The most striking element in this track has to be the drums though, powerful from the outset they are the solid backbone on which the track is based, and support it they do. Heavy, rolling and full on, this is another full on in your face assault of the metal variety, and it’s good to hear. An Abstract demonstrates the drumming once again, speeding things up to back the insane guitars and roaring vocals. It’s amazing that in a track like this where there’s so much going on you can pick out every element of the band doing their thing, it’s testament to them as a band that they can all work together on that sort of level to achieve tracks like this. This is quite possibly my personal favourite track from their selection as it’s so full on and in your face it just cuts out all the bullshit and breaks all the elements down into raw power.
Means To An End continues the theme set across the album so far, once again opening dark and sludgy with heavily distorted guitars and those powerful drums. Fluctuating between roaring riffs and screaming lead lines this track once again pushes the boundaries of what the band is doing and firmly imprints their foot print upon it. The vocals are once again guttural and solid throughout, backing up the often insane riffs offered up by the unit as a whole. As the track fades out and we’re launched into final track Closer everything is rounded up as a finale. Faster from the outset yet once again insanely laden with lead lines and mad riffs, this track seems to summarise everything that this band is. Roaring vocals soar throughout the track powering it ever onwards to its conclusion. Sludgy, heavy, broken down, roaring and intense, this finishes the album pretty much as it began, in your face, full on and to the point.
These guys are heavy, make no mistake about it! At the same time though they’re also managing to create a sound which pushes the boundaries of metal, adding in new and exciting twists on the guitar lines and pushing the drums into the mix so you become transfixed by what it is they’re doing. The result, well, go and listen to it for yourself!
