Absynth Aura
Describing their 2011 album as a ‘Manifesto of how the band wants to be and communicate’, Absynth Aura were recently sent through to us to check out. Featuring meticulously crafted arrangements, a modern and neat sound and taking influences from soul to funk, pop to prog and of course, Hard Rock, this promises to be an album worth checking out regardless of how hard it might be to label the music they make.
The sound of Believe Me is not what I expected at all, opening hard and heavy before ushering in a female vocal line, this is some seriously accomplished stuff going on here. The tracks are kept bass heavy yet melodic throughout meaning that there’s enough power to satisfy the fans of heavier things, yet enough softness to draw people who wouldn’t normally go for this genre into things. Fire In My Eyes follows much the same idea on the album, again keeping everything powerful throughout yet adding in melodic vocals which are quite simply stunning, elevating the whole mix into something which isn’t just rock music, it’s rock music crossed with harmonies from angels, I would challenge anyone to not like at least one track on this album.
Smile has to be one of the high points of the album, a track which opens with a soaring lead line over soft strummed acoustic guitar lines before those incredible vocals are brought in once again. The sound you get here is one which you’ll fall head over heels for, it’s quite simply stunning. The vocals have to be the real show stealer throughout, almost adopting an R&B style yet fitting this genre perfectly, softening the mood of anyone who hears it. As if to soften even further, Looking For The One is a ballad of truly epic proportions. Soft, soothing, angelic vocals and an emotional piano line all work together to create a feeling which is going to make even the heaviest fan turn soft for a moment and embrace the sound which is going on here. Even as someone who listens to the heaviest of the heavy, I found myself crumbling and falling in love with this voice which I was hearing – this is a seriously amazing track, and one which I never thought I’d like, but there we go! Claudia from the band is looking for the one, well, based on her voice…I’m sort of hoping I’m the one!
Getting back on track, Life returns us to the world of rock and pulls you out of the emotional state which you’ve probably fallen in to, once again opening with a strong guitar line and hammering into a track contrasting itself throughout with soft vocals and hard backing music. This is the band at their best, and another track which I would highly recommend you check out if you get a chance.
All too soon though, the end is upon us and Zombie signals the end of the album. Covering a classic like Zombie (Cranberries) is always dangerous, it’s a track which I for one hold very close to my heart and one which I’ve liked since I first heard it. What you’ve got here though is a band who haven’t tried to recreate the original, they’ve taken it and made it into their own song, firmly placing their own stamp on to the track and almost altering the sound of it so as not to cause offence to anyone. As a track, it’s a hell of an achievement, and demonstrates just how able these guys truly are when it comes to creating songs to showcase each and every element within their band.
What can I say about Absynth Aura other than I think I’m in love with their singer Claudia (for her voice people….). Their music is hard hitting and powerful, melodic and emotional, well produced and written yet firmly rooted in their own sound throughout. This is an album which is exactly what I always hoped I would hear when I set up this site – an album you need to hear from a band you need to hear!
