Accursed Spawn
We featured a track from Accursed Spawn a while back, so when they got in touch about their EP, Engendering a Sociopath, we jumped at the chance to check their stuff out. Coming straight out of Ottawa in Canada, these guys have drawn influence from the likes of Cannibal Corpse to craft their all out, heavy approach designed to rip your throat out and gouge out your eyes.
Title track Engendering The Sociopath greets us, opening with sound effects before launching us into the all out onslaught of Acid Bath Murderer. This is heavy heavy stuff going on here, with drums rolling around the carefully crafted mix of all out aggression. The vocals are fast, the guitars distorted and the bass pumping, crafting a sound which isn’t going to give you any options, it’s going to get into your head one way or another before forcing itself further and further down your throat. My personal favourite moment has to be the break down midway through, coming as a shock initially before accentuating the raw power of the band even further – if you’re looking for a band to accompany a sunny Sunday afternoon drive, then this isn’t for you, but if you’re looking to unleash hell, this should work!
Stabbed In The Dick doesn’t offer any release from the all out heavy approach, throwing us straight into another mix of rolling drums, hammering guitar lines and those incredible guttural vocal lines. Powerful, fast, distorted and full to overflowing with venom, this isn’t just going to destroy the venues where it’s played, but also the people there to witness it. What I love is how despite the power, the band seem to find a space for a little solo to be included, somehow throwing in a sense of melody to the mix, almost as if to say ‘look what we can do!’. As Devoid Of Conscience comes into being, the all out raw approach continues, once again throwing us a mash up of distortion and forcing it down our throats. Somehow once again creating a track which isn’t just heavy, but also somehow melodic in some elements, this is some serious music going on here. Personally, this track stands out as my own favourite from the EP, the pace which it sets and progression within it just work perfectly to get you involved from the word go – awesome stuff.
Closing the EP with the even heavier (yeah I questioned how as well) Forcible Confinement, there’s one last nod towards their influences before setting you free. This final track is almost a combination of everything before it, somehow holding more power and more aggression than the tracks so far yet managing to pull it off, keeping you wanting more!
I’m a big fan of the real heavy stuff, but what I really love about Accursed Spawn is how they’ve taken heavy and made it their own, adding in galloping beats one minute, blistering guitar solos the next and a break down the next. This ability to combine the heavy with the unexpected is what makes Accursed Spawn stand out as a true force to be reckoned with, one which is going to stand up to the other bands of the genre and make them take note – and it won’t be long before we’re all being forcibly subjected to their continual assault on the world – bring it the fuck on.
