Italian band Admin recently dropped us a line to let us know about their album, Doomsday, to see what we thought. Not giving away an awful lot (in English!) on their FB page, I managed to work out that the band was formed in 2007 and is due to release their album on the 11th of February. Drawing influence from the likes of Tool, Alter Bridge, Korn, Alice In Chains, Hoobastank and Creed, this promises to be something pretty darned interesting – so I figured I should stop trying to learn Italian and get something written!
Title track Doomsday opens the album and immediately sets the tone dark yet Eastern, an Eastern style guitar and sitar line leading the way into things, slowly building to incorporate all of the elements of the band before launching into a bass heavy mix of power. Showing off their influences from the moment the track begins, there’s a real mix going on here, from Alter Bridge guitar lines through to Hoobastank style choruses, it’s easy to listen to and something which after a couple of listens to, you’re going to be singing along to whether you want to or not! Doggy Style follows much the same conventions, keeping everything bass heavy yet adding in a really funky edge to the guitar work. What I really like about the start of this album is how everything works together, the music matches the vocal lines perfectly and forms something which you can imagine being played out in front of you and keeping you fully on board.
As if to compound this further, Rain comes up next and once again throws you into a mix of funky guitar lines, clean and soaring vocal lines and altogether melodic music. The chorus on this track is another one which you’re going to be singing along to after a couple of listens, it’s got that catchy quality which you can’t help but embrace, can’t help but turn up ever louder and want to be part of. Forever In Me though slows everything down a little and switches on the emotional element, this time opening soft and soothing, keeping melody the key focus of the track. This is a real high point on the album and a track which if given some radio play, could well propel this band into the spotlight further. The chorus here is a triumph, relatively simple in form yet one which you’re going to come back to or find yourself humming when you least expect it.
Far From Home returns us to the hammering guitar lines of previous tracks, once again opening with an Alter Bridge style riff and not releasing until the moment the track comes to a close, the whole time keeping the throngs of people moving and entertained. Break The World and Freedom follow much the same conventions, tracks which are going to get the crowds moving and loving every second of what the band are throwing out at them. This isn’t the heaviest music in the world yet it’s music which you’re going to want to see on the live scene, it’s got that sort of power which you can’t help but want to hear more of. Distractedly on the other hand is a track which you have to hear to believe, opening with power and throwing everything the bands got into the mix to be heard, this is the highpoint of the album for me. Showing off their influences once again yet firmly placing their own stamp onto things, this is a track which is going to be the one which gets the band noticed, the one which everyone wants to hear live and the one which I know I will be listening to the most from the album.
38 Times continues the bass heavy rhythms and keeps things pumping onwards, this time breaking things down a little more and making you want to play along with them, as this track played out my guitars were looking pretty tempting! All too soon though it’s the end of the album and Ridiculous playing you out. Opening soft and soothing yet suggesting there is more to come, this track closes the album perfectly, leaving you with one hell of a memory of an awesome track and making you want to experience the whole thing all over again. Firmly displaying their influences once again, this track seems to be a melee of all of the bands these guys look up to but played in their own style, it’s a hell of a final track!
Admin are one of those bands which I went in to not knowing a lot about, but am left now wishing I lived in Italy so I could go out to see them this evening. Their music isn’t the heaviest in the world and won’t make you want to smash the place up, but it will sit you back and make you realise there are bands out there producing solid rock which deserves some serious recognition. Drawing influence from some of my favourite bands, this is a band which I can firmly say I’m a fan off and want to hear more from, we’ve just got to convince them to come to the UK so everyone can hear what they’ve got going on.
