Adrenechrome
Jon Asher has a habit of sending quality bands our way, so when he said that we should be checking out Adrenechrome, an Ontario based band who describe their music as ‘that awesome, ‘melt your fucking face’ kind of metal’, we were pretty damned interested to see what was going on. The band go on to say that ‘like zombies with a taste for flesh…Adrenechrome is a quartet of heavy metal monsters set upon the world with an appetite to bring back good old fashion in your face, no frills rock n’ roll’ – which sounds pretty cool to me! We were put onto their EP, Hideous Appetites so figured we’d hit play and check things out for ourselves!
As Titans Fall kicks things in to being, we’re launched straight into a distorted world of thrash like riffs, hammering drums and a bass heavy rhythm backing everything up. Breaking down as the vocals kick in, this is a track which packs a punch, sticks to a simple and straightforward recipe of gravelly vocals, rolling double bass, hammering guitar lines and pounding drumlines, it’s a mix which is sure to get pits moving, people chanting along and loving what they’re hearing. There’s an almost classic feel about things at times here, yet at the same time a sense of updated freshness, almost like it’s music for the new generation. Even chucking a guitar solo of epic proportions into the mix, this is rock done well, and a start to the EP which sets things up very nicely indeed. Six Guns follows much the same sorts of conventions, only this time throwing in a sense of Southern Rock to the mix as well, offering a lighter edge to things which is packed with melodies, hooks and moments which you know you’re going to be humming for days. This track is a live anthem in the waiting, the sort of track that you know is going to go down a storm, and secure these guys a slot as a band you need to make sure you check out.
The Horror and Hymn For The Heathens both continue to push the boundaries of the EP, both tracks offering up the bands own take on things and incorporating a serious level of skill within them, but it’s when Winds Of The Void comes into being that another serious high point is achieved. Opening with a melodic guitar line which lures you in without giving too much away, this track sets itself up as a dark moment, a moment which builds and builds until the final crescendo is reached and you’re tossed into a mix of elements that quite simply, engulfs you in music. Melodic guitars work with hammering drums and roving bass rhythms, the whole mix sounding like something off of a prog album, something accomplished and ridiculously well put together, and something I’d love to see them reproduce live.As the vocals kick in, the track seems to change slightly, moving more towards the straight forward rock n roll approach once again, but at the same time continuing to showcase just how able a band we’re dealing with! Enter epic guitar solo, hammering, thrash like section, and once again we’re left in awe that these guys are out there doing this, and we’ve only just discovered them – I’m rapidly discovering a new favourite band!
Moving on to Locust Wings the EP continues its distorted journey, this track initially sounding like something straight out of the hard rock handbook before, once again, showing off who it is we’re listening to. Strained vocals combine with hammering guitars to form a sound which isn’t quite metal, but is heavier than rock – it’s a sound which simply works, and is going to have you hooked from the word go! It’s only a shame though that there’s only one final track remaining, but as Hobbled comes about to close the EP for us we’re left on one final high point. Finishing with a track which once again packs one hell of a punch, it’s a solid close to a cracking EP. Sounding like a hybrid of Alice In Chains and Dream Theater at some times, as well as showcasing their own personal influences throughout, this sludgy final track may well finish this EP, but it opens the chapter for what is to follow – and I for one can’t wait to check out what comes next!
We get a lot of people coming to us saying that we should check out a particular band, but with Adrenechrome, I’m so glad we were put onto them! This is a band with some serious skill, some serious ability, and an EP which is going to blow your mind when you hear it. To be quite honest, I can easily see these guys achieving a hell of a year next year if this continues, definitely a band you need to make sure you’re following!
