Amongst Carrion
We were recently sent through the debut EP from Welsh metallers Amongst Carrion, a band who seem to be quickly etching a prominent name for themselves within the UK scene (or so their one sheet says!). Having originally begun as a garage band covering the likes of Metallica and Lamb of God, the band have now finally put the finishing touches to their debut EP ‘We That Should Not Be’ – and I’ve got a copy here ready to go!
The haunting building Intro which leads into the track suggests good things are going to follow, opening immediately dark and ominous and leading the way into the album, gradually building and hinting and very heavy things to come. Fading out before Painted Red takes the lead, the ear shattering riffs which greet you are a bit of a shock, but my word this is some serious stuff! Heavy, raw, powerful yet surprisingly refined, this is a track which is going to grab you by the eye balls and throw you into a pit of distortion before laughing at you struggling to get out. Raw and raspy vocals back everything up whilst the simply powerful backing music continues the track onwards, melodic yet heavy meaning you can’t wait to see what comes next.
Shadows Over Me doesn’t do anything to sooth the soul, once again kicking in with a powerful double bass beat and throwing every ounce of energy the band posses into the tracks sound – this is something to make sure you’re fully ready for before listening to. If ever you wanted to hear a band who on the live scene are going to kill crowds and destroy venues – this is it. What I found really striking about the band though was that despite the aggression and power, there’s a serious sense of melody running through everything to keep it alive. Snowblind is a perfect demonstration of this as it opens with a soaring lead line snippet before launching once again into an all out throw down of epic proportions. Once again keeping everything firmly on the louder side of things, this is another track which I think is going to find its full potential on the live scene, sure it sounds good on the album but live, it must be immense!
The Fear In Her Eyes is a high point on the EP, opening as it means to go on over a rolling bass beat and keeping the vocals firmly in the spotlight, this is some seriously well put together music right here showing off elements of death, black, prog and all out hardcore, all moulded into a perfect little ball for you to listen to at your pleasure. This is probably my personal favourite track from the EP and one which I would make sure you check out for sure! We That Should Not Be (which is due to be the bands single) follows the conventions of some of the earlier tracks through opening heavy yet melodic to immediately pull you into the mix. Keeping things pounding throughout, the real show stealer on this track has to be the drumming going on – who ever this guy is he’s insane! Once again hard hitting throughout, this is a track which you’re going to listen to time and time again, just to make sure you’ve not missed a single moment of it. As a closer to the album as well I think it works as it leaves you with a taste for the band firmly in place, you can’t help but want to hear more from these guys!
In all, Amongst Carrion have been one of those bands which has genuinely caught me off guard and made me consider the sort of music I listen to. It’s heavy yet melodic, well put together and quite simply built for the live scene from the moment the EP begins to the moment it ends. If you’re looking for a new band to listen to which is going to blast your ear drums to hell and back, then this is your band! Definitely one to look out for!
