Ancients
Hailing from Nashville in the USA, Ancients have a solid following offering fans a blend of death and groove metal. They got in touch about getting their music out there and heard over on the shores of the UK so we were only too happy to help out!
Opening with Collisions you suddenly realise why these guys have got such a following, they ram their music down your throat with uncompromising heaviness from the outset. Pounding drums back slamming riffs whilst roared vocals carry the track onwards. Bringing in layered vocals whilst the guitar adds in a lead line, this track grows and grows becoming ever more epic as it progresses. Imagine Hatebreed made heavier and you’re getting somewhere towards where these guys are, but they’ve got even more venom, even more raw power, it’s insane! Heavy throughout, this track sets the scene for the album, and quite a scene it is!
Epigenetic follows on, opening sludgy and dark before once again kicking into that unrelenting pace. Slower than the previous track, this one seems even heavier as you listen to it, using sludgy guitars over pounding drums accompanied by roaring vocals to hammer the track down into your ears. Kicking into syncopated heavier and faster sections, these guys are on a roll and don’t seem to be slowing down. As Chariots of Fire kicks in, the theme continues, building from a faded riff into another pounding example of why you need to listen to this band. Raw and edgy yet well produced, this track once again hammers home the qualities of this band, offering more guitars, more drums and more downright raw vocals than before and continuing to create one hell of a massive sound.
Tapping The Champagne Glass once again opens with those sludgy guitars before kicking into an even more insane section, the vocals are spat at you whilst the guitars and drums rove around in the background creating a mish mash that works on a lot of levels but hammers home one solid message, we’re a band you do not want to mess with. Guttural vocals are backed up by screaming, all the time ploughing along to the insanely fast drums, solid bass line and roaring guitars. Breaking down midway through this track I’d say this is my favourite track from the album, it’s unrelenting yet melodic yet groovy yet insanely heavy – there’s so much to take in I don’t know where to begin! Fading into the lead line which opens The Drought, everything seems to slow down a little and the melody takes over. Don’t be lured into a sense of safety though as soon the riffs kick back in and the track powers on, drums and bass backing up a solid guitar riff topped by an awesome lead line. Breaking down into a disjointed yet somehow successful section, this track doesn’t have any vocals, but doesn’t need them. Listen to the instruments, they tell the story and it’s all you need to hear.
Final track Canis Majoris finishes the album in style, opening with sludgy guitars and solid drums before kicking in with those roaring vocals once again. This track is somehow syncopated yet on beat at the same time, testament to the bands ability to play their instruments and write tracks which will blow your head off. As it finishes I felt myself reaching for the play button again, just to make sure I was sure that I’d just experienced what I thought I had.
Ancients are one hell of a band, they create a sound which is akin to massively successful bands on the metal circuit yet make it their own. Never relenting in their quest to melt your face, this album will leave you questioning why they’re not over here touring so we can actually get to see them live! If anyone has a few spare quid and wants to send me over to the States to see them then I’ll happily take it, I can imagine these guys are simply EPIC on the live scene. Check them out, you won’t be disappointed!
