Aquila
To South-Western Ontario now to check out Heavy Metal band Aquila (Italian for genius or mastermind don’t you know!) who recently got in touch with us. Creating a sound consisting of machine gun rhythms, intense guitar work and death metal vocals, their music is described as a face punching listening experience. Formed in 2006 and already having achieved some pretty notable accomplishments, their music seems to do all of the talking for the band.
Kill Or Be Killed is testament to the bands outlook on their music, opening like a marauding army and not relenting until the moment the track comes to a close. Rolling double bass backs everything up whilst the guitar work keeps a sense of depth firmly in the music, the vocals adding to this and creating a sound which is going to get you moving and tearing the place up. This is music which is crafted for the live scene, throwing a sound out at you which is akin not so much to a punch in the face, but more like being hit by a bus. Despite the all out power running through the track, there’s also a sense of melody to proceedings, something which moves this away from a simplistic tag such as death metal, and instead makes it into something which a lot more people are going to be able to listen to.
In Our Darkness maintains the onslaught from the band, once again throwing down from the moment the track comes into being and not allowing you a moments rest until they are ready to let you go. More frantic than the previous track, this one seems to move from all out power to slightly restrained sections, the quieter moments almost allowing you to fully take on what’s going on here. Alternating vocals abound above pummelling drums and hammering guitar lines, the bass adding in an ominous rumble beneath things and keeping it firmly on the heavy side of the spectrum. What I really like about this track in particular is how it seems to move through different sections, all the time keeping things clear and concise so as not to confuse the sound which you’re being subjected to – put simply – this is music which is going to destroy live venues and speakers alike, and it’s awesome.
Finishing with Breathing Fire, Breathing Life you’re left with no doubts in your mind that this is a band with one clear outlook – destruction! Heavier again than the previous tracks, this almost serves as the crescendo to what you’ve heard, leaving you a gibbering wreck on the floor wanting to hear more purely for the energy which runs throughout everything. As a track, this is once again more on the frantic side of things, faster and more intense than the tracks before yet still keeping a sense of melody in the music. This is quite possibly my personal favourite track from the selection here as it seems to close everything off and leave you with just enough to make you want to hear more, it’s quite simply a triumph.
Aquila are one of those bands which some people might simply put down as being too heavy, but if they do it’s because they’ve not actually listened to what’s going on. The music doesn’t fit into a death metal or hardcore tag, simply because it’s more advanced than that, throwing the listener a range of different approaches and leaving them to make up their own mind about what they’re hearing. Sure, there’s heavy here, but the melody is what makes this so special, and a band which you need to get out there and check out!
