As Silence Breaks
Taking the prize for the most distance is As Silence Breaks. Based in Sydney in Australia, these guys were put on to us (or us to them depending on how you look at it) by Damon from Inner Light once again. Checking out their tracks, I’m beginning to feel it’s been worth hearing about them, now we’ve just got to work out how to get them over here!
As Wrath Will Be Delivered kicks in you’re treated to a heavy riff underpinned by rolling drums before the roaring vocals kick in. In your face from the outset, these guys are not to be messed with, producing solid music mixed and mastered to perfection so every element of the track can be heard. Suddenly contrasting into different layers of vocals, this track takes on a heavy and full on yet melodic approach, forcing you to sit up and listen and constantly surprising you with what’s on offer. The rolling drums, the faded guitar line in the back ground, the riffs, the vocals, the bass, it’s all right there to be heard and all works together to create this sound which is epically huge, it’s awesome.
Parasite continues the theme set down by the previous track, only this time it seems to be even heavier and full on than before. Forcing the bass heavy melodies and rolling drums into your ears the vocals take the lead and drag you along for the ride. Continuing to be heavy throughout the track, once again contrasts appear that add new elements and exceed the expectations which you might go into this with. Whether it be the gang vocals, the roaring, the insane drumming or awesome riffs, there’s something here for everyone. Pay particular note from around 2 mins onwards from the speedy section, through the breakdown back into a speedy section before kicking back in even slower….that’s how to do a breakdown people! As the memory of the glorious breakdown fades and Integrity kicks in, everything returns to that sludgy guitar line and roaring vocals, once again setting the pace for the pits to get started. Matching the guitar line, the vocals and drums seem to match one another throughout, almost propelling the words out of the speakers and into your ears. Contrasting vocals once again add another depth to this track meaning this will be one which you’ll revisit time and time again.
Final track Who Said Jealousy’s a Curse opens with pounding drums, soaring riffs and bass heavy melodies all over again, this time sounding fresh and new somehow. Building up to the vocals kicking in, this track sets the scene for you, then smashes it up right in front of your face. The vocals kick in changing the whole tempo of the track, forcing you once again to pay attention and listen. Powerful drums continue to back all of the elements of the track as it becomes almost funky, forcing you to move along with it before kicking into a solid heavy section which you know will get everyone moving live. In all, this track finishes things off perfectly for me, leaving me want a whole lot more.
I remember only really knowing Australia for their big band exports, and I guess I’d never really thought of them as having a metal scene there, but man have I just been proven wrong. If these guys are anything to go by then there is one hell of a scene out there, and I want to hear more from it!
