Aurelia
Jake from Windsor Ontario based Aurelia recently dropped me an email to let me know about the band and to see what we thought about their EP, Latex and Hot Sex. Describing themselves as the stem of all things previous and all things to come, and setting out to do something that hasn’t been done before, this Punk/Alternative/Hardcore/Grunge band take their lead from the likes of Nirvana, the Ramones, Alkaline Trio and System of a Down, so I figured this was something to check out!
Greeted by a fresh sound as You Should Be Proud comes to life, there’s a real sense that this is an uplifting track designed to grab your attention and brighten up your day. Keeping the guitars relatively restrained over a simple drum beat, the bass is kept high in the mix which adds a sense of depth to proceedings before launching into the full tilt chorus section. This is where the catchy element is truly brought to life, progressing in a way which is sure to have you singing along and craving to see them live, this is a really accomplished sound. Well produced and refined in its sound from start to finish, this is a track which is going to demonstrate just what a band can do when they think about how the craft their track, they don’t rely on distortion to carry things forward, instead allowing the track to develop around you, enveloping you as you’re pulled into the sound.
Rip It Out continues in much the same way, this time opening with a darker sound than before in the progression of the guitar work. Accomplished once again, there’s an almost eastern feel to the song, built into the guitar line whilst the drums build everything up around you. Launching into a far crunchier sound than before and throwing a double bass pedal in for good measure, gone is the chilled out sense of calm and in its place is a track firmly placed in the post-punk style. Powerful, hard hitting and well put together once again, this is another accomplished track and one which I think will fully realise its potential on the live circuit. Bob’s Overwhelming Rage carries this theme onwards, once again launching head first into a fast paced melee of hammering drums and soaring guitar lines. Layering the vocals to a chanted ‘go’ to really signal they’re ready to go before throwing in a ‘fuck you’ for good measure, this is another track which I imagine absolutely slays on the live scene. Powerful from start to finish, you almost forget the chilled out beginnings of the EP here, yet the refined sound is still firmly in place so you don’t forget who you’re hearing. This track is also my personal favourite from the EP thanks to the broken down section midway through leading into a nod back to the chilled moments of earlier on – excellent stuff.
Closing the EP with West, Bro you’re left with one final reminder that this is a band out to be noticed, out to be seen and out to change the scene around them. Faster, heavier and more intense than any of the tracks so far, this is one which is going to have live crowds going mad and tearing venues apart. Another high point on the EP for sure, this is another track which really demonstrates and ability throughout the band, they can all play as a unit but can all craft their own sound as well, allowing every single element to break through and be heard.
I’ve really enjoyed the EP from Aurelia and think that this could be the start of something pretty special. Their sound is refined whilst still holding enough power to keep you engaged from start to finish, catering for fans of the softer side whilst still throwing enough distortion into the mix to keep the heavier fans happy! Sure there’s elements of punk here, and grunge, but over all this is a rock band, pure and simple. Further to this, if this is their EP…..what’s the album going to be like?!
