Battle For 2nd Place
This female fronted band is from Glasgow, Scotland. Lead singer Orla has had success before having shared the stage with the likes of Damien Rice and also having a track used on grey's Anatomy and Vampire Diaries. Battle For 2nd Place has had airtime on Radio 1 and Kerrang radio. Throwing out an Alternative grunge-pop they are well worth a listen.
Held To You starts with a purposeful and punchy guitar riff. The charismatic vocals of lead singer Orla come to life soon after, combining superbly with fast paced riff and hard hitting drum beat to produce a beautiful cocktail that flows through the whole of your body. The track isn't particularly heavy but what it does do is grab hold of you and slowly addict you to the melodic vocals on show. A second set of male vocals kick in, these are just as melodic as Orla's and add a different dimension to the track as they work off each other.
The second track I listened to was called A Better Chance. The distinctive sound of raw distorted guitars fill the room before a heavy, pulsating riff takes over. A menacing, probing drum beat plays alongside until the vocals enter the frame. The addictive, dynamic vocals seem to command the drums and riffs to slow, completely changing the tempo to the track. The track follows this slower pace for a while before you see a new side to Orla and her voice. The song evolves into a heavier, punchier piece with the vocals adapting to the change, something which we hadn't seen in the first track.
The final track I got my hands on was Say It Ain't So. A much more chilled and melodic opening to the track greets us compared to the previous tracks. The guitar riff is upbeat, bouncy and simple yet very effective. The solid, colossal vocals and flawless, riffs and beats make this track what it is. There are many variations in tempo throughout the track, which work well alongside everything else going on. For me the track epitomizes what the band are all about. Orla's vocals are the main attraction however you can't forget the other three members that provide more than adequate support and are clearly very talented.
I liked this band, I think every member plays off each other and the outcome is a really punchy, dynamic sound which leaves you wanting more. The foundations are certainly in place for the band to push on in 2012 and achieve even bigger things.
