Beneath The Tide
We were recently sent through the latest album, SLDC, from Beneath The Tide, a London based Deathcore band. Taking influence from the likes of Parkway Drive, The Ghost Inside and Whitechapel, this 5 piece have already shared the stage with numerous bands, working and practicing to produce this offering – so I figured it was only right I check it out to see what’s going on!
As the Intro leads you into the album, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re listening to something akin to Pendulum as electric sounds fill the room, a heavy bass line rumbles away and a very electro feel takes over. This soon changes and leaves you though as 96:00 comes in to take over the lead. Roaring guitar lines suddenly replace the electronic effects, a rolling drum beat kicks in and all of a sudden you’re thrown head first into a pit of pure raw heaviness. Keeping the beat rolling, screams back up roaring vocals, the whole mix forming a sludgy bass heavy mix of power – you can imagine the sort of reception this is going to get on the live scene and believe me, it’ll be insane! Throwing down into break downs, roaring sections of hammering guitar lines and powerful drumming, this is the sort of music that isn’t just going to scare your Gran, it’s going to kill her! What I really like on this track though is how the guitar line seems as intricate as the rolling drums, the two seem to match each other to keep things at a pace, not relenting until the moment the band is ready to release their grip.
Our Testament follows on exactly where the last track left off, opening with a Hate Breed style guitar riff before launching into another pit of power. The whole mix is almost more refined on this track, giving a sense of melody to proceedings whilst making sure that the pure downright heavy vibe is still firmly in place. The vocals range between guttural and screeching on this one as well so once again you’re faced with contrasts within the track, this time even adding in a soaring cleaned up vocal line to elevate the track and pull you even further into their distorted mix. There’s some really complex elements to this track as it progresses, from little lead snippets through to rolling drums and syncopated time signatures, the whole thing forming something which is not only destructively heavy, but refined and well put together. Days Gone By is soon upon us though and this time, doesn’t hold back on any front. I was going to initially draw comparison to Devil Driver here, but to be honest I think this is even heavier than that, once again ushering you firmly back towards circle pit territory! Breaking down at times, blisteringly fast at others, this isn’t music which you can sit still and listen to, it’s music which is going to make you destroy everything around you! Once again there are contrasting vocals running through this track, matching the guitar line behind everything whilst the bass keeps the sound deep and powerful, there’s nothing here which you can get bored of, it just forces you to listen to every single element going on.
Simon Says Die closes the EP and as expected, does it in style. Initially sounding as if it is going to be a little more restrained as it opens, the guitars soon build to a crescendo and you’re firmly sat back once again to behold what’s on offer. Rawness abounds throughout this track giving it a real live feeling, almost as if you could be watching this rather than just listening to the album. As it comes to a close there’s no a doubt left in my mind that this is a band who are going to absolutely slay on the live scene, this is the sort of band that will leaves venues as nothing more than a pile of dust following a show, and I have to be there to witness it!
Beneath The Tide are one of those bands who don’t do themselves justice on paper, they’ve got a sound which is firmly influenced by their peers, but they’ve taken it to a new level and made it their own. The sound is heavy sure, but when you really listen to it, really break it apart and check it all out, there’s more than just heaviness going on. Sure, this won’t appeal to everyone, but I highly recommend you get out, check these guys out and make sure you get involved in the pits which are certain to form – awesome stuff.
