Beretta Suicide EP Review
Rising from the ashes of the fallen, Beretta Suicide are dragging the bloated corpse of rock n roll back to the streets, or so their Facebook bio says! This is a band we featured quite early on in the life of the site and at the time, I was blown away by their mix of rock, punk, grunge and pretty much everything heavy all into songs which feature screaming guitar solos and pounding drums to shake you to your core. Having put together a new self-titled EP, the band got in touch to let us know it was on their site to download (for free by the way so there’s no excuse) and to see what we thought.
Opening proceedings with To Play and Win I found myself immediately transported back to the first time I heard these guys, fading in the track so that it grows in your ears, using the drums as the foundations but adding in different layers of guitars and bass behind everything so you’re pulled in, the sound getting increasingly louder until finally, it breaks! Kicking into a thunderous riff mixed with a heavy dose of bass, this track is catchy and hard hitting from the second it kicks off. Spitting the vocals over everything, you can’t help but want to hear more, the melodic yet heavy music does all the talking needed, then the different layers of vocals further accentuate the track to make sure you’re engaged, make sure you’re listening and make sure you’re loving every second of what you’re hearing. This is sure to be a track which slays on the live scene – I can picture live crowds chanting along to the ‘I do not think that you love me’ chorus then letting loose to the heavy riffs. I particularly like the sound byte from Charlie Sheen on this track, it adds a completely different element to the track, one of almost humour and light relief, yet it works well!
Another Wolf In The Wings follows on at number 2, a track which the band have used as their first single from the EP – and you can see why! Launching into an almost Buckcherry-esque style riff, this track is almost funky and will get you moving along. Roaring guitar lines, powerful vocals, pounding drums, heavy bass - there’s everything in this track which you could possibly want from a rock track including a catchy assed chorus which you’re bound to be singing along to after a couple of listens. As the track comes to a close and Itchy comes into being, the theme continues along much the same route as it has done so far. Opening with the guitars taking the lead before kicking into a fast paced section layered with guitars and different levels of vocals, this is a track which straight away pulls you in and demonstrates just how much energy these guys have got as a band. Catchy once again, this track is without a doubt one which you need to see on the live scene, even sitting listening to it you can imagine the crowds going mad for it. What I really like here as well is how they’ve managed to incorporate one of the most blistering solos I’ve come across for a while and achieved it flawlessly – I mean it’s perfect.
Couldn’t Be Done follows on and opens much sludgier and dirty than the tracks so far, it’s almost like they found a new heavier setting on the amp when they set out to record this track and ended up with a far heavier tone to the guitar line. The key part to this track for me though is the chorus – it’s quite simply an anthem in the waiting. There’s so much depth here, so many elements being incorporated into what is a relatively simple track yet they’ve managed to transform it into something which really sits you back and just makes you think wow, they’ve even managed to fit in a break down half way through! If you’ve any doubt about the ability of these guys, listen to the final 30 seconds of this track – the insanely paced double bass pedal, the hammering riffs, the melodic yet hard hitting vocals, the bass line – honestly it’s mind blowing. As Go Slow comes into being it’s almost a shock after the hard hitting finish to the previous track, but it almost acts as a brief respite from the assault you’ve endured so far. Opening dark with a simple vocal and bass combination, you find yourself sitting back, chilling out and relaxing – until all of a sudden the band smash you in the face with a fast paced mix of hammering guitars, pounding drums and different layers of vocals – it’s like they’re trying to catch you off guard! Catchy once again, this is a track which you’re sure to come back to time and time again, it’s got that accomplished sound to the recording as well as all of the elements you would expect from a far more well known band of this type – how these guys aren’t more well known yet I don’t know but based on this, that could all be about to change.
Oh Lord is a complete contrast to everything so far, opening with a picked lead line before ushering in the sludgy guitars once again, this track has all of the hall marks of a classic rock anthem yet it sounds fresh and new. Once again picking up the pace and hammering onwards, this track almost seems to close the EP and say ‘yeah, we’ve just shown you what we can do!’. Catchy, raw and energetic from the outset, this track is a triumph in the purest sense, it’s punky, rocky and downright dirty – and it makes you want to see these guys produce more and more just to make sure you didn’t dream the whole EP. I’d also say this is probably my personal favourite track from the selection, it’s just quite frankly insane, and has once again destroyed any belief I ever had that I could play the guitar! Closing the EP with an acoustic version of Another Wolf in the Wings, these guys have produced an EP which meets the most crucial of any music – it takes you on a journey and once again renews your belief that there are bands out there who can write tracks which you’re going to love for a long time to come.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, but I really like Beretta Suicide. Their music is heavy yet melodic, catchy and energetic and quite frankly, is perfect for either sitting back or partying depending on your situation. What they’ve produced here is an EP which I am sure a lot of people will love, but they’ve also showcased their own abilities as musicians and as a band. There are so many little elements here which are built into the tracks that on first listen you won’t hear them all, but give it a few listens and you’ll discover that what once seemed like a relatively simple track is in fact a carefully crafted rock anthem in the waiting – bravo guys.
