Beyond Betrayal
Garry from SAN PR recently sent us through details of melodic metalcore unit Beyond Betrayal, and their sophomore EP, Money Can’t Save You Now. Due for release on the 27th of August this year, the band drawn influence from the likes of Parkway Drive and Bring Me The Horizon, forming a sound which bonds elements of death prog and metalcore into a sound they can firmly call their own. Based on this, and the fact it was mastered by Shane Frisby (Bury Your Dead & The Ghost Inside), I couldn’t wait to hit play to hear what was going on!
Opening with November it’s immediately striking just how massive a sound these guys have managed to achieve, the pummeling bass rhythms melding with the rolling backing drums and underpinning the heavy and powerful guitar lines. Raucous and aggressive from the word go, this isn’t a record to go into thinking things are going to be soft and laid back – go into this ready to jump around the place, slam others around you and generally, destroy everything within reach. Throwing in breakdowns to make sure you realise just how much power these guys hold, this is a track which is sure to destroy live venues, get crowds circling and make you want to get this EP – and it’s only the first track! Most striking for me though is the almost ‘prog’ style section midway through, it was unexpected yet works exceptionally well.
Scott’s Got A Time Machine (He Told Me Tomorrow) follows on, once again opening as it means to go on and showing that these guys aren’t just a one trick pony. Launching into the track in a manner which shows off their death metal influences and ideas, this track doesn’t hold back and straight away launches into the sort of thing which isn’t just going to get a pit going, it’s going to make the venue the pit! What Lies Inside is a complete contrast as it opens, showing that there’s a softer and more melodic edge to the band when they want there to be, but not letting it go on for too long. Once again building into the powerful and riff fuelled moments which made the early parts of the EP stand out through an incredible build up, the track seems to almost grow around you at first before once again, resuming the all out aggressive and powerful approach. This is my personal favourite track off of the EP, there’s just something about it which made me want to destroy things, it’s awesome.
Finally reaching Money Can’t Save You Now to close the EP there’s still no release, finishing on a note which will leave you breathless, scared and wanting to go through it all again. The final moments of this EP demonstrate an almost tribal approach to metal, showing off the styles of Soulfly and Sepultura at some moments whilst showing off the more obvious traits of Bring Me The Horizon and Parkway Drive at others. Closing on a high, it’s hard to see how they’re going to follow an EP like this, yet I still believe they’ll achieve it.
What can I say about Beyond Betrayal other than blimey, that’s one hell of an EP? If you’re looking for a band that doesn’t hold back, doesn’t do things by halves and will continually surprise throughout the EP, then this is it – highly recommended just doesn’t seem to do it justice!
