EP’s
Counter Culture (2005)
Mel caught up with the guys at their single launch at Metro’s Fremantle on 30th Nov 2012. Supported by Perth band The Love Junkies and Melbourne’s Kingswood. The venue filled slowly and steadily throughout the night to a rather decent sized crowd for the 1-hour set by British India.
The self confessed social misfits are living proof to never judge a book by it’s cover. They have been around for 8 years already yet they have a youthfully awkward appearance, making them look very much like a college band. Their sound however contradicts that appearance completely. They do fall into the typical Indie Rock genre by my definition. They play honestly and within that format of jolly yet still rebellious lyrical hooks that make you familiar with their tunes straight away, combined with riffs that keep your attention and your body moving. Judging by the callbacks from their receptive Perth fan-base their lyrical story lines are what the 16 – 25 mixed alternative demographic can relate easily to. Declan Melia is very much the hinge pin of the band during their live performances. He engages the crowd from the start confidently with humble rapport. His style of play resembles Children’s Collide front man Johnny Mackay, a fair and flattering comparison, that I’m sure Declan would approve of. They are a musically capable bunch that loves what they do. It’s great to see a band that really enjoys their own tunes and performing them live time after time. The boys played 14 tracks including some fresh tracks due for release in 2013, as well as the crowd pleasers from their back catalogue. British India will continue to grow musically and in popularity over the New Year. Indie Music lovers will enjoy them, and fans of bands like the UK’s Feeder will embrace their material instantly.
