Brutal Horizon - The Art of Something Brutal
London
based Brutal Horizon got in touch about their EP; ‘The Art of Something
Brutal’; so that we could have a listen and see what we thought. This one
caught me off guard…
As first track ‘The Pulse’ begins, you’re lured into crunchy guitars layered with bass and a solid drum beat reminiscent of the roughness of Silverchair Frogstomp. This borderline grunge is soon forgotten as suddenly, the beat changes and the vocals tear into you, I won’t lie, I was taken aback as I wasn’t prepared for it. Then, as I’d gotten used to the vocals, everything changed again and in came another set of vocals but in an almost gothic style. Switching between vocal styles, this track kept me intruiged as to what was going to happen next, all the time supported by a sold riff (and a guitar solo thrown in for good measure!).
Second track ‘Unenlightened Children’ changes everything with a slower, chunkier riff but with the vocals rising and falling with the drums. Dual guitars and a real mix of pace keep this track going right up until the second it ends. Leading on from this, ‘Soldiers of the Sand’ finishes the EP from the band. Starting with a military recording and breaking into a chunky beat, the vocals on this track are different again with a much raspier edge to them. What really struck me about this track was when the vocals were taken away and all that was left was guitars, bass and drums – the style and sound here could have been taken straight off of an Iron Maiden intro.
This EP is very different to the ones which we’ve been sent over the last week or so and I think this is largely down to the influences of the band. As you listen to this EP, you’ll be struck by the vocals, struck by the style of playing and the way the songs are structured, all the time thinking about the bands they remind you of. I think that’s why I liked it, because it made me think back to times when I discovered bands and heard things I’d never heard before.
I’ll be interested to see what this band can come up with from the studio as I think they’re going to come out with a much more refined cleaner sound. Providing they stay true to their roots and their influences, there should be some really interesting stuff to come out from these guys.
