Brutal Truth - End Time (Relapse Records)
This band from New York, formed in 1990, disbanded in 1999 and reformed in 2006 since then they have altered the line up several times with the one constant – ex Anthrax bass player Dan Lilker. Since reforming in 2006 they released ‘Evolution through Revolution’ in 2009 and this album ‘End Time’ in 2011.
They are described as Grindcore or Deathgrind. More commonly known as death metal. Brutal Truth are the most hardcore of metal/punk bands. They have finished touring to sell out audiences in the US and Canada, currently on tour in the UK and the rest of the world.
The album consists of a massive 23 different tracks however the shortest runs for just 5 seconds and the longest for an epic 15+ minutes.
My own experience of this particular type of music is limited therefore I did have to engage the help of a muso friend ‘Hellman’ who has way more knowledge of this genre. I asked him to rate the tracks based on the catalogue of similar music he enjoys and describe the demographic this kind of thing would appeal to. So between us this is what we came up with up.
The album appears to be produced to give the listener that real and raw live experience. Unfortunately to an untrained ear most the tracks do sound similar. It’s impossible to judge the lyrical content, given the nature of vocal delivery.
The opening track ‘Malice’ has a sludge feel, slower, heavy and churning metal, similar to early - Isis. There are a few stand out tracks Celebratory Gunfire, Butcher, Gut-Check and Addicted simply because they have a more traditionally structured format. ’Warm Embrace of Poverty’ had an eerie feel as if the late Chuck Schuldiner was channeling his vocal influence into this track.
If you are a fan of early Carcuss, then this album will appeal to you.
It would seem if this kind of thing is what you are into then it doesn’t get anymore powerful than this. Those who are fans of Death Metal have given the album and the bands live performance rave reviews, such as Kerrang!, Outburn and Decibel.

Note from Dave:
Further to what Mel's said above, I agree on both fronts. This is the sort of music which I can quite happily listen to, and personally I think there's a real sense of melodic brutality running through the sample tracks on the bands Facebook page. All too often a band like this can aim to be heavy for the sake of being heavy, but this seems more refined and well put together than a lot of the heavier side of things. Definitely not one for you Beyonce fans out there, but worth a look!
