Captain Horizon
Captain Horizon are described as drawing from a wide range of influences, writing and performing songs unlike anyone else and know for creating something new with every song they write. The chaps were kind enough to drop us a line letting us know about their latest album, The Lights Of Distorted Science, released on the 10th of December 2012, and checking what we thought of things. Of course being the helpful folks we are here at Loud-Stuff, we jumped at the chance to hit play, crank the volume and have a listen!
As The Light gets things going we’re gently led onwards, a soaring lead line initially getting things in motion before the bass heavy rhythms of the track take over the lead. Moving into an upbeat melee of bass lines, pounding drums and subtle guitar work, the track takes on an atmospheric approach, not going all out but at the same time, not holding back, resulting in a mix which is both upbeat and laid back at the same time. Haunting vocals echo out over the backing music, the track continuing to grow in power as it progresses and all the while, keeping things firmly under control. There’s something quite incredible about this track, something which suggests these guys are ready for the next step on the ladder, and are about to get some serious recognition as soon as people catch on to this album. Shadows and Vampires once again continues this approach, refusing to go over the top yet still managing to pack enough of a punch to keep you satisfied at what they’re giving you to check out. Every element of the band is on show throughout this track, all of them mixed in a manner that allows them to stand alone yet, at the same time, working well as a unit – another solid track.
Patch picks up the pace somewhat, this time ushering in a fast paced track which is sure to be a hit on the live scene. Listening to this track it would be easy to draw comparison to later Funeral For A Friend style stuff as well as other rock units, but at the same time it’s important to take on board the uniqueness of the track on offer here. Powerful bass rhythms pulsate through the solid drum backing, accompanied by upbeat guitar work and a vocal line designed to hook you in and keep you listening. To me, this track is a serious high point on the album, and a moment I would highly recommend you check out. Moving on to The Sun Has Set a sense of atmospheric calm takes over, opening with a Winston Churchill speech in the background accompanied by numerous other sound bites, the mix luring you in and encouraging you to listen harder, matching the hard hitting words with a building sense of anticipation. As the track continues to build we find ourselves being pulled in more and more, each moment grabbing a different part of our attention and letting us know that this is going to be another moment to remember for sure. Building to the climax of the track, we’re presented with another track which makes us question what we thought we knew, what’s going on with this album, and how it’s going to follow on from here.
Moving back to the more laid back style which got things going for Bottom Of Your Heart, the feeling of the album continues once again. Moving through Light Years, Pious, Shell, Judge You and Brand Me A Ghost, each track seems to present a slightly different outlook on things, a slightly different feeling but an overwhelming sense that the guys know what they’re doing. It’s when Torn Up My World comes about though that another serious high point is achieved and we’re once again left marvelling at the ability of Captain Horizon and this album. Syncopated beats accentuate all of the elements that make up the track whilst at the same time, a sense of distortion flows through the mix, allowing a sense of rock to creep in whilst at the same time, keeping that atmospheric feeling flowing through things. Once again it’s impossible to resist the track that they’ve managed to put together here, and listening to it I found myself cranking the volume ever higher and higher, not wanting to miss a single moment of it.
It’s only then left for Underworld to close the album, finishing with a laid back track designed to bring the album full circle and leave you wanting more. The closing moments here are once again a triumph, leaving no doubt that this is a band on the up, a band with a serious mission, and a band I think we’re going to be hearing a lot more from in the near future.
What can I say about Captain Horizon other than wow, that was awesome! This album isn’t just good, it’s incredible from start to finish, the sort of thing you’ll come back to time and time again, the sort of thing that’s going to keep you listening throughout, and the sort of thing you’ll be raving about to everyone you know. Definitely a band I’ll be looking to catch live this year!
