Collider
4 piece sludge band Collider, from Ottowa in Canada, recently got in touch to let us know about their self titled EP, released in July of 2011. Having been together for about a year so far, the band simply describe their music as ‘metal’ but do go on to state that they have a vested interest in ‘cheeseburger liquor parties’. Now, I like cheeseburgers, and I like liquor, and to top it all off I’m quite fond of the occasional party, so based on our shared love for these key ingredients to life, I figured I should probably see what the music was like!
Tundra gets things underway and immediately sets the dial to heavy – opening with a bass heavy riff over hammering drums, the whole mix taking on form gradually over rolling drums as it builds up. Sludgy and dark from the outset, this is a track which is going to have live venues circling and tearing the place apart, it’s all out destruction from the word go! Ushering in roaring vocals, the track takes on more of a developed sound as it progresses, the technical elements all working together to form a track which it would be rude to simply pigeon hole into one specific genre, instead carving its own path and allowing the listener to make up their own mind. What I found most striking about this track was the breakdown towards the end where the sound transformed, what this shows is a band who are not just about the heavy, they’re considering how the track is formed and how they can mix things up, and boy does it work!
Moving into Crusher Of Suns there’s further testament that this is a band who can take different sounds and incorporate them into their own style, this time opening with a clean and reflective guitar line before ushering in a synth effect over the top and bringing in the drums. The mix you end up with here is both reflective and powerful, gradually building up into the track fully taking form. Sludgy and dark once again, this track seems almost heavier after the soft intro lines, throwing in some pinch harmonics to keep things alive and moving. The vocals once again steal the show for the most part here, somehow sounding heavy and raw, yet matching the backing music perfectly. Once again throwing different approaches in throughout the track, this is one which you need to make sure you check out!
Finishing the EP with Titana Boa you’re left with no doubt that this is an EP you need to own. Opening dark and clean once again before throwing in one of the heaviest riffs I’ve ever come across, honest to god it made me jump the first time it kicked in! Keeping things slow and insanely heavy, this is how metal should sound, or at least how I always imagined it would sound. There’s slow yet solid drums, rumbling bass lines and those riffs which you simply need to play loudly to fully appreciate. The whole mix builds into the track, a dark melee of sludgy distorted instruments, and what a track it is. Alternating from the slow through to the insanely fast and syncopated, this is a track which demonstrates how a band can take something relatively simple and make it as complex as they wish – finishing the EP and leaving you breathless.
Collider need to get out there more and need to begin generating some serious interest in their music as their sound is quite frankly incredible. This is too advanced to put into a simple genre, but think about metal combined with prog and sludge, and you’re getting somewhere close to the style they’ve got. This is a band which won’t appeal to fans of softer stuff, but if you like riffs which are heavy enough to shake you to the core, this is for you! All I ask for is a copy of the EP to be sent to the UK as this is music which needs to be played to a lot of people, very loud!
