Cotidal
When I heard this band was instrumental (for now), I was a bit sceptical. I usually prefer a powerful voice with my heavy metal music but I must say I was pleasantly surprised.
Cotidal are a Manchester based group formed at Salford uni in 2010, with Nick and Mark both on guitar – they’re currently looking for members to join their band, which you can apply for through their facebook page. And even though they lack teammates, they sure know how to make up for it. Both these guys know how to play their instruments extremely well and god knows how they’ll sound like once they get a full team together, but I’ll certainly want to hear more.
I was redirected to their website to listen to their tunes and I was quite surprised. Usually when I tend to listen to new stuff I only listen for a few seconds, skip to the middle and then skip to the end, but despite their six songs features on their website only being instrumental and for the most part, at least averaging five minutes per song (except for ‘Faded’ which seemed unfinished at only one minute long and abruptly cuts off at the end – maybe a mistake uploading guys?), I listened to each song from start to finish and really enjoyed it.
It’s hard to put a label on these guys. They’re metal, but not too metal. It’s almost a mix of easy listening and metal put together. Something you’d have on in the background but listen to at the same time. The fact there is no singer made it even more enjoyable in my opinion as you focus on purely listening to the guitar riffs rather than listen to the lyrics of a song. You really have to hear it to believe it but it’s totally worth it.
Each song is professionally recorded by the sound of it, and apart from ‘Faded’, as mentioned above, I kept coming back to each song to listen to a particular favourite bit of it, something I’ve only ever done to the bigger bands. If I absolutely have to criticise them in any way I’d have to say that their last song ‘Of Rust’ drags on a bit too much. It’s just over eleven minutes long, and even though it starts off great, right about the eight minute mark I thought they were pushing it a bit too far.
Overall I was really impressed with this band, despite honestly not having high expectations from an instrumental group. The link to their own webpage where you can listen to all six songs is on their facebook fan page. I highly recommend you head over there if you fancy something different to listen to but still want to stay true to your heavy metal roots.
