Cretura
We were recently contacted by Norweigen band Cretura, a band stemming from Bergen and offering Melodic Horror Metal – music based around melodic instruments and horror inspired lyrics and musical themes. Having formed in 2010, the band have changed line-ups but maintained their target of offering the metal world something new and exciting, something which people haven’t come across before. The band is made up of members between the ages of 14 and 19, so I figured it was time to check out what these youngsters had going on!
Opening with Faceplant it’s easy to see where the horror inspiration comes into being, the music is dark and distorted from the outset, moving from a simple metal tag into something even darker. Distorted guitars hammer away as the guttural vocals power everything up over the distorted backing track ,occasionally allowing some soothing female vocals to break through as if to offer a brief respite from the assault. Sludgy riffs, hammering bass lines and pounding drums power the track onwards creating a foreboding sense of anticipation – you want to know what’s coming next but you know it’s going to be heavy! Moving from the roaring into a more melodic section, the vocals alternate between the two styles and create that feeling of a horror movie once again, it’s like those moments of calm which lead into the section which is going to make you jump. As an introduction to a band this does exactly what it says on the tin, hands you a dose of metal and makes sure you listen to every single element of it! What really struck me though was how accomplished these guys are on their instruments, it’s genuinely hard to believe that they’re so young!
Hatefuel follows on, another track which immediately harks back to the sounds you would expect to see on a dark movie of sorts. The lead guitar line over the hammering bass heavy rhythm develops this from what could be a relatively simplistic opening, into something much darker and heavier, something which once again suggests there is much more to come! Kicking into a hammering section of rolling drums, roaring vocals and more of those soaring lead lines, this is a track which really stands out from the selection on the bands FB page, it’s once again well put together and incredibly well written. Incorporating different elements into the music, this track once again seems to work its way into your head with its dark approach, alternating between fast and slow to make sure you’re still fully engaged and paying attention to what’s going on. This is another track which really made me sit back and question how the hell a band who are so young can produce something which sounds this accomplished, it’s something incredible when you think about it, but also something pretty damned promising as this is potentially the future of music!
Final track Blood Red Dreams closes proceedings from the bands page, another track which opens dark and haunting. The cleaned up line which opens this track leads into a funk fuelled distorted mix of guitars and pounding drums, all backed up by synth to keep the dark feeling in the mix. The vocals contrast strong male vocals against soothing female backing, keeping everything relatively clean to really accentuate what’s going on. Soon enough thought you’re tossed back into a pit of distorted sounds, all working together once again to create the monster which these guys are so fond of, raw power tinged with darkness.
I’m genuinely shocked by Cretura, how these guys can be so young yet able to produce music which is this well accomplished is a wonder to behold. Their music is definitely dark, representing their love for the darker side of films and their approach of incorporating this into their music. I look forward to hearing what comes next as already, these guys have shown they can write dark yet accessible tracks, so the future is looking pretty bright!
