Crysis - Insane EP
Crysis, a band from Oxford, play metal – plain and simple, and that’s what I like so much! I don’t see the point in dressing music up or being too complicated with things when quite often, doing what you can do well works the best! We had a listen to their EP 'Insane' to discover what they had prepared...
‘Shoot the Glass’ opens with guitars building the listener up to what is to come. The drums come in and set the pace before the vocals kick in and the track explodes. Building up to the break down, this track reminded me of Lamb of God at times, purely for the sludgy distorted guitars, slow but heavy drum beats after speedy sections and roaring vocals, this track is definitely a good opening to the EP.
‘To the Gallows’ follows and sets a much darker tone straight off. The guitars build into a faster over all track, maintaining the heaviness of the previous track but adding a new sense of urgency to the EP. The beat gives you a picture of how the crowd would move to this track, even sitting listening to it I found myself nodding along. Again there are breakdowns in this track, laden with clean vocals preaching the lyrics to the listener before roaring them home once again.
Final track ‘Your Temptation’ is my favourite from the EP. The opening guitar line builds up to a double bass pedal and some roaring vocals, this song starts as it means to go on! Building through the verses, this track breaks down in the choruses to a much slower, heavier beat again – the tried and tested recipe is always the one which works well. 3 minutes in though, the song changes completely as an almighty solo kicks in, I had to listen to it a couple of times to make sure I wasn’t dreaming – awesome stuff!
This EP was a real treat to listen to, mainly because of the simplicity of it all. Sticking with what the band is good at, breakdown after breakdown keeps the listener engaged and wanting more, and to finish with a guitar solo really finished this off for me.
I can’t comment on what this band are like live, but if they’re anything like I imagine it’ll be somewhere pretty close to amazing. Listen to this band and enjoy the pure simplicity that can come from metal!
