D-Fault
We were recently contacted by Josh from D-Fault to see whether we could feature some of their tracks on the site. Checking them out on their FB page, I’ve had a listen to what’s on offer and figured it only right I share my thoughts with you!
Back Of The Classroom opens distorted but melodic, the drums setting the pace for the guitars as it kicks in and the bass kept high in the mix so it’s right there to be heard. Clean vocals soon push their way in, the clean approach against the bass heavy rhythms form a track which really connects with the soul and keeps you listening to what’s going on. Kicking in to a catchy chorus which will soon enough have you chanting along to ‘back of the classroom’ (so much so I’ve nearly written it down numerous times!) you’re kept involved in the music. I don’t really understand the screechy sounds (they don’t really fit with the theme of the track) before the middle guitar solo, but they sort of lead into the solo I guess. The solo is relatively simple but further emphasises the catchiness of the track, nothing more complex is needed here! Kicking back into the catchy chorus to end the track I found myself looking forward to what was to come next!
No-one’s Fault follows on, kicking into a faster section of guitars, drums and bass before bringing back in those clean vocals – there’s a real 90’s feel to the music here, harking back to the likes of Spacehog and other bands of a similar sound. This track is just as catchy as the previous one, but more energetic which I think is bound to have crowds moving along to the rhythms. Speeding up in the mid section of the track and to end it, this is sheer energy which live, must be simply epic! That’s When I Reach For My Revolver follows on, and immediately calms things down a little. Opening with cleaned up guitar lines set to a faster beat, this track seems to contrast the tracks which have come before it, keeping things just as melodic but cleaner, more relaxed almost. This is a contrast within itself as the drums keep a relatively fast pace throughout. Kicking into another catchy chorus and bringing in the more distorted guitars once again, this track is another triumph for the band and seems to encapsulate their sound – it’s melodic and relaxed whilst still holding enough energy to keep the crowds engaged.
Straight Forward opens almost like a Queens of the Stone Age track, distorted guitars pushing forward all backed up by another hammering bass line before kicking in with the clean vocals which I’ve come to love so far. The drums set the pace throughout the track, keeping to a relatively simple beat and letting the music do the talking. Another catchy chorus greets us on this track which soon enough is bound to have you tapping your feet and nodding along. Doo Doo Doo follows on, opening far more grungy than before with distorted guitars and sounding almost like older Ash tracks used to sound like – the vocals are once again melodic which contrasts against the distorted and fast paced guitar and drums. The effect on this track is something which you imagine being quite simply awesome live – testament to this bands ability to capture their sound on a recording. The bass is once again really prominent on this track which adds further depth to its already catchy sound. This is probably my personal favourite track from the selection as it sounds just like the sort of music which initially got me into the heavier side of music, awesome!
Final tracks Word of Mouth and Into The Nettles end the selection on the bands FB page. Word Of Mouth is another melodic triumph of catchy rock music, kicking in to a distorted yet melodic guitar line before bringing in the vocals to make sure you’re hearing the story the bands got to tell you, this is another catchy, bass heavy and anthemic track which you’re sure to love. As Into The Nettles finishes the selection you’re left with no doubt that these guys can put together tracks which will stick in your mind and keep you coming back for more and more. The track is once again catchy and well produced yet somehow raw and energetic. Harking once again back to older style rock, this is another track which ranks high on my favourites list from the selection, make sure you give it a listen!
I really really like D-Fault, they’ve taken me on a trip down memory lane this afternoon and made me remember a lot of bands I’d forgotten about. Sounding at times like Ash, other times Spacehog, other times almost Cranberry like – there’s so much here which will pull you in and keep you listening. Consistently catchy without becoming too mainstream to be considered pop, this is a band who are going to be massive if they’re given the right exposure, all I hope is that they stick to their guns and keep this style coming! Oh – and the weird scratchy sounds on Back Of The Classroom, still not sure about those! Having said that, one negative out of 7 tracks isn’t bad going!
