Daggers Drawn - 2010 EP
Four piece metal outfit Daggers Drawn from Plymouth got in touch and put us onto their music so we had a sit down, put the kettle on and pushed play – then promptly forgot about the kettle…
I remember several years ago, a friend of mine sat me down and played me ‘Haven’ by Dark Tranquility, it’s an album I still listen to frequently now. The first thing that came to mind when I started playing first track, ‘New World Order’ from Daggers Drawn was exactly the same as on that fateful day – how the hell does someone manage to roar like that?!
The all out throw-down of ‘New World Order’ is followed by ‘Skeletwhore’, a track with guitars rising and falling, drums rolling all over the place and different layers of vocals powering the song forward. As I listened to this track I couldn’t help but think to myself that THIS will be the song that is their break through. ‘Slit’ carries on the tone of the album in the same way, leading on to some dark break downs complimented with an almost ‘funky’ guitar line with pinch harmonics for good luck.
‘Glass Eye’ begins by luring the listener into thinking that this song is going to be a softer one, but soon changes into a speedy bass laden trough of sludgy guitars and vocals, continuing the theme so far achieved throughout the tracks. Final track, ‘All For One and All For None’ finishes the album as it begins – solid, fast and heavy
‘Twisted Angel Black (Song of the Manglebird)’ is perhaps the one song here which I question. It starts off with an eerie guitar line building up to some more speedy riffs, but I’m not sure it fits in with the rest of the tracks, it just seems to stand out. It’s not a bad track, I just think it lacks some of the power which the other tracks carry.
All in all, I really like all of the tracks on this EP and am going to keep a close eye on what this band does next. They’ve said that they’re going to be changing their direction and style a bit in their next release – all I’ll say is don’t change too much – what we’ve got here already is a winning recipe!
Final word…..more please.
