Daggers Drawn New EP
We featured Daggers Drawn many months ago when we were first starting up Loud-Stuff, and at the time I remember being blown away by their music. When Dan contacted us to say they’d recorded a new EP therefore, needless to say I jumped at the chance to get my grubby little mits on a copy and to let the world know how the guys are getting on. In his words: ‘We think it blows our old stuff out of the water, it's a definite progression with more adventurous songwriting and a far better production, not to mention an amazing new vocalist who has sung in Sleath (formerly known as Dearly Beheaded) and Mindjuice who were pretty big UK alternative metal bands in the 2000's. There are even guitar solos this time around! ‘ – so this is sounding pretty good already!
Pariah Among The Lepers opens the EP dark and sludgy almost sounding akin to the likes of Alice In Chains in the way it sort of fades into being. This comparison is thrown out of the water within seconds though as you’re treated to a rolling double bass beat underpinning some roaring vocals, already you can see how much these guys have progressed as a band. What I really like about this track is how the sludgy guitar line really leads the track through, but the whole thing is reliant on the rolling bass and drum combination whilst the vocals elevate everything – it’s quite a complex track to take in when you hear it. Throwing the promised guitar solo into the mix in the background, this is a track which demonstrates how a band can progress and grow as a unit, the result being a track which will grab your attention as soon as it begins and not let go until the second it comes to a close. Sure, there’s still elements which demonstrate that it’s Daggers Drawn you’re hearing, but it’s like they’ve done a Bill and Ted training trip – truly excellent stuff.
Midas In Reverse follows on, this time opening with a Devil Driver style riff which powers the track into the most almighty roar you’re going to hear for a while. Continuing the keep things heavy yet funky, this is a track which you will want to move to, it’s impossible to hear it and stay still. Pounding drums assault your ear drums whilst the guitar riffs continue to power everything up to 11, the whole mix forming this monster which you can’t help but turn up increasingly louder and louder until you find yourself going deaf and the neighbours banging on the wall. Emotcion on the flip side brings you right back to ground with a bang, it’s so unexpected! Syncopated to the point it feels disjointed yet melodic, this track is heavy once again but way way more advanced, it’s technical in an extreme way meaning you just listen, just to make sure you don’t miss a single moment of what is going on in your ears. This is quite possibly my favourite track from the EP as well purely down to how well written it is, how they can perform this on the live scene is something I have to check out.
Closing the EP is World Of Lies, another blistering mix of hammering drums and roving riffs, the whole mix once again grabbing your attention and not letting go until the second it ends. The vocals are powerful, the drums hammering and the whole mix something which you can’t help but be engaged by as it progresses. Melodic, harmonic yet destructively heavy, this track closes the EP leaving you wanting to know how the hell they’re going to follow 4 tracks like this. To quote Dan – sure these blow the older stuff out of the water – but I’m not sure that covers it enough – this is such a progression that I can’t help but wander what on earth they’re going to come up with next!
I’ve liked Daggers Drawn since the first time I heard them, but this new EP really puts everything into perspective and displays a band who have advanced and progressed to one which is now ready to hit the big time. The songs are well written, well mixed and well produced leaving you with no doubt that these guys are going to be a force to be reckoned with! I for one cannot wait to see what comes next as based on this, it’s going to be awesome!
