Deadlines
We were recently contacted by Tim from Southampton based Deadlines, a 6 piece band describing their style as Ambient Metalcore. Having released their debut EP, The First Collapse, AND a new single in the form of The Road To Whiterun, I figured it was only right that I get out there and check out what was on offer from these guys!
EP:
Introducing the EP through The First Collapse, everything is set dark and mysterious from the outset, echoing noises backing up a haunting lead in which is sure to straight away engage people and make them want to know what is going to follow on. What follows on is soon revealed in the form of Wreckage, a blistering track full of hammering riffs, rolling drums, heavy bass and distorted vocals. Fast paced, energetic, unrelenting and downright heavy from the second it opens to the moment it comes to a close, this is a hell of an introduction to a band! What I really like on this track is the contrast which the band have managed to create between the roaring vocals and the cleaned up line during the chorus section, it adds a further dimension to proceedings and makes this into something which I think a lot of people are going to be into! The rolling drums also make this a track which I have to see on the live scene, this here is circle pit territory and everyone’s invited.
Moving into Cause and Effect (Featuring Sean Scott), we’re once again smashed in the face with a hammering riff over pounding drums, this time adding in a soaring lead line to elevate the track. The different layers of vocals on this track really add in a whole new dimension of heavy here, yet the soaring melodies of the chorus once again sooth everything over, creating further contrasts and generally making you want to know how the hell they’re going to follow on from this. Chucking in one of the heaviest breakdowns I’ve come across in a fair while, this track is testament to this bands ability to mix insanely heavy with incredibly melodic backing sounds, with electronic effects – there’s a hell of a lot going on here yet it all works. Give Up The Ghosts follows on and seems to follow the suggestion from the name, opening haunting and dark before kicking into another hammering selection of riffs, bass and rolling drums under guttural vocals. The whole mix here works to create something heavy, aggressive and downright in your face – this is one to check out and one which I think is going to destroy live venues!
Make Amends is another example of how the band can take heavy and combine it with melodic, creating a sound which not only makes you want to hear more but also makes you a little wary of what’s coming up, there’s no end to the power here! Guttural vocals and bass heavy rhythms pave the way to another soaring melodic chorus section, this time adding in a further edge of emotion and really making this into a highlight from the EP as a whole. Subsidence follows much the same design and continues the theme of smashing your face in with riffs, then soothing you to make you feel better before doing it all over again! Much more bass heavy this time, there’s something about this track which made me think of festival stages from the early 2000’s, it’s got that sortof sound but with more aggression, more power and more heaviness, I think this could well be a track to keep an eye out for!
Closing the EP is The Divide, another track which is bound to whip live crowds into a frenzy and get them moving along with the band. If you want to hear a track which demonstrates how a band can take a simple tag of metal and transform it into something new and unique, this is it. The melodies behind the music created by the electronic sounds and soaring lead lines really make this one which I think is going to get a lot of people onto Deadlines, and is also possibly my favourite track off of the EP.
I’ve been really struck by Deadlines, their music is heavy sure, but there’s a really melodic edge to things which makes you want to hear more, makes you want to see what comes next and makes you really listen to what they’re saying. The music is aggressive yet soothing, powerful and emotional – all combining to form a monster which, given the right promotion, could well prove to be huge!

Single:
The latest single from Deadlines, The Road To Whiterun, was released in December of this year and was another track which the band wanted us to check out!
Opening as pounding as you would expect, there’s a real sign of development here from the band, the sound is more refined sure, but it’s also heavier if that’s possible! Bass heavy rhythms are key once again, backing up the distorted guitar lines and roaring vocals, but the chorus, oh the chorus….you need to hear this! The chorus is once again melodic but incredibly well put together, adding in those contrasts which made their EP such a powerful record in the first place. Rolling double bass pedals surround you as the riffs continue to assault you, the vocals not doing anything to sooth you but creating a sound track to back this musical aggression. Catchy in a way, this is a track which demonstrates what happens when a band really sit down and work on their sound, and my word they’ve achieved it!
If this is just the single, I want to hear the new record as soon as possible, the sound here is insanely heavy, full of electronic effects, powerful vocals and soaring lead guitar lines. The mix you end up with is something which is going to engage you and make you want to hear more – so get on it please guys!
