Death Becomes Her
New York based Death Becomes Her got in touch recently about their music to see if there was something we could do to help them get some exposure over in these parts of the world. Always the happy and obliging type, I had a listen to them to see how the music sounds. Describing it as Metal/Death Metal/Progressive, I’ll be honest when I say I was intrigued!
Last Chance For Forgiveness answers my questions as it opens with a roving guitar and bass line backed simply by some cymbals from the drums before kicking into one of the heaviest sections of a track I’ve ever heard. Guttural roars back sludgy guitar lines, pinch harmonics and rolling drums creating a sound which is simply designed to make your ears bleed – it’s awesome. Sounding almost funky when the guitars and drums combine before kicking into a purely heavy breakdown, these guys create contrasts within their own music, taking death metal and making it their bitch to be played with as they want to. Bringing in differing vocals also helps to develop this track, making it one you shouldn’t judge under the death metal heading, it’s far more than that. Finishing insanely heavy, this track will leave you sitting back questioning what on earth is coming next.
The answer to the question is Complex, not as in complicated, as in the track is called Complex! Opening with more of those riffs on the guitar and bringing back in that double bass which is so awesome, this is another track which will rip your face off, spit in your eye sockets and somehow still leave you begging for more. Losing the funky edge, this track focuses far more on the downright heavy side of things, purely punishing the listener with soaring riffs accompanied by pinch harmonics over the pounding drums and roaring vocals – the mix created is unrelenting and powerful, yet one which somehow retains a sense of harmony within the band.
What Lies Ahead finishes the selection from the band, opening heavy once again and raising the bar with the production on the track, this is probably my personal favourite from these guys. Sounding akin to Fear Factory at first they soon kick back into their insane riffs and pounding drums. Guttural vocals power the track onwards, underpinned with the guitars and drums to keep the track powerful and heavy throughout. Adopting the progressive edge at times, the band alters the beat of the track at times to make sure that you’re still there and paying attention, before once again launching back into their raw power.
Death Metal is all too often described as noise by people who don’t understand it, they can’t see the number of elements which are combined into tracks to create the sound which you hear. Break down what you hear from this band and not only have you got tracks which are head smashingly heavy, but also incredibly well put together. Listen to the drums, the bass, the guitar lines and the vocals, all right there in the mix throughout ready to be heard. The end product is a band who can play their instruments and produce tracks which will convert anyone who’s not heard them before. 3 tracks aren’t enough for me personally, more please!
