Deny The Lie
Jon recently got in touch about an upcoming release from his own label to see what we thought, sending us through the latest single from Deny The Lie. Formed in 2010 (and previously known as Let’s Go Friday, these guys are experimenting with dark and passionate material, influenced by the likes of Paramore, My Chemical Romance and Blink 182. Signed to Self Made Records, the latest single promises to be one to check out, so what does it sound like?
Don’t Say No demonstrates that there’s some serious punk influences running through this music, opening with a sense of urgency and launching you head first into the track to make sure you feel the full force of their music. Raw and yet somehow refined at the same time, this is the sort of music which is both melodic enough to get new fans involved and hard enough to satisfy the fans of the heavier side of things – it’s a clever mix and it’s been done well. Catchy and powerful throughout, you can well imagine this being played on a summer festival stage and getting scores of people singing along, it’s got that sing along value without becoming cheesy or over the top, in all it’s a damned good single!
Alright Now continues the idea of hard hitting opening moments before lowering down into a more restrained break section. I particularly like the guitar work on this track, somehow combining a sludgy yet funky riff with scores of lead snippets, all elevating the track from a simplistic punk rock track into something more advanced and more welcoming, something ready for the next generation who are going to hear it. Once again the band have captured the catchy essence within the music, and once again we’re treated to another track which isn’t going to disappoint on the live scene when it’s performed.
Deny The Lie are one of those bands which you’re either going to really enjoy or not understand, and I think it’s that simple. All too often people discount this type of music because they class it as commercialised or too ‘poppy’, but realistically we all love tracks that we can sing along to or just kick back to – and that’s what this is. Is this music going to change the world, I don’t know, but does that matter? The aim here is music which you’re going to enjoy, music which is going to get you out of your seat and make you move – and they’ve achieved that with perfection.
