Depth
I’m always excited by getting the chance to hear music before it’s released to the general public, so when Garry from SAN PR dropped us a line about the new EP, Waiting For The Waves, from UK Rock unit Depth, I was over the moon that I would get to hear it. Described as offering up a combination of old school metal riffs like Iron Maiden with the craft of A Day To Remember and Killswitch Engage, these guys are setting out ready to take over the world – so I thought it only right we help them on their way!
Opening with All I Know we’re greeted by a solid start, the opening moments of the track almost building up before launching us full tilt into a riff fuelled melee of guitars, drums and rumbling bass lines. It’s easy to see the old school comparisons from the off, as well as the more updated approach to things which gives the sound of the band a fresh and new edge, forming into a hybrid of different styles and approaches which will grab your attention, force you onwards and keep you involved in the mix. Throughout the track we’re treated to intricate guitar lines, hammering rolling drum lines, pounding bass lines and a combination of vocal styles, resulting in a sound which is off heavy, yet still packs enough punch to satisfy even the heaviest fan, it’s a clever mix which has been done damned well! Moving into Hope In Mind the similarities to the likes of KSE become clearer, this time launching into a mix of hammering rhythm guitar lines, rolling drums and more of those soaring vocals. My particular favourite element of this track is how the focus is drawn towards the bassline at times, focusing on an instrument which is all too often overlooked and presenting us with an insight into just how powerful a sound it can create when it’s allowed to do its thing fully.
Title track Waiting For The Waves comes up next and immediately raises the bar for the EP, this time launching onwards at high speed and showing off the heavier side of the band with aplomb. Fast, heavy, distorted yet packed full of melody and vocal harmonies, this is a track which stands out as a serious high point on the EP and one which I highly recommend you check out. The melodic side of this track is quite incredible to behold, the sort of track which allows you to immerse yourself in the track fully, take on board all of the different elements and feel that you’re witnessing something special. I think it’s also important to mention the mix – it’s been done in such a way that you can hear everything, every single element of the band is on show and working in harmony with one another, simply a massive high point and a brilliant track. Second Chance almost seems to lead on naturally from the title track, this time moving into a more technical realm and using the power of that intricate lead guitar line to drive the track forward, keeping things melodic yet adding in more power once again. Slowing down to a soft and acoustic moment, my immediate thoughts were of early Lost Prophets style stuff, the combination of the pumping backing music and soft vocal line working to craft that sound which first got them noticed, something which is going to stand these guys in good stead moving forwards.
Closing with Whispers the EP comes to a close on anything but a whisper, showing that the band have still got a punch held back to close things. Powerful, fast and at times, syncopated to show off their technical edge, this is a band that don’t do things by halves, instead opting to keep things exciting throughout and leave you chomping at the bit for just one more taste from the band. It’s a sterling end to a solid EP, and a stepping stone up to what’s going to come next for the guys – which I personally feel is going to be something pretty damned exciting!
Comparisons between bands and Iron Maiden come in all the time, and most of the time are relatively unfounded if I’m honest, but in the case of Depth the band seem to have the power to back it up, the technical ability to amaze and the sort of style that’s going to push them into the spotlight if they keep making music like this. Having heard this EP I know I want to see the band live, want to speak to them about their music, but most of all, want to know what’s going to come next – personally, I think it’s going to be awesome!
