Detatched
We were recently contacted by the guys from Detatched, a ska band from Wales offering up punky good times! Based on their music, I thought it only fair I should give them a listen to see what they had on offer! We checked out the music they had on offer on their Myspace page to see what was going on.
Opening with Teeth Rattling Bone Shaker you’re immediately reminded of the likes of Goldfinger, Reel Big Fish and Less than Jake, good time music which kicks in and makes you want to skank around the place like a nutter. Catchy and energetic from the outset, this is a track which renews your faith in ska bands, soon having you singing along with ‘she’s the one who won’t back down when the shit starts to hit the fan’, it’s impossible not to. Adding in a further distorted dimension to the track at times through little snippets of extra reverb on the guitars, this track moves from catchy to catchier, all the time keeping you hooked and making sure you’re paying attention. Finishing with a bit of a solo (but not what you think!), this track has been the perfect introduction to a band –so does it continue?
Don’t Bite The Crust follows on at number 2, opening with more of a raw edge than the previous track which further demonstrates the energy which this band has. Kicking into a fast and pacey section of distorted guitars layered with brass and pounding drums, this is another track designed to pull you in and force you to listen to what the band’s got to say. What I really like here is how every single instrument of the band can be heard, it means you’re always aware of what’s going on and who’s doing what, which is something pretty awesome to hear. Horizons follows much the same pathway, opening with distorted guitar and the bass high in the mix before bringing in the brass, this is another track which will get you moving about. Sounding akin to the little known band Brodie (saw them years back in High Wycombe and they were awesome) through the vocals, drums and guitars, this track holds that air of familiarity which will make you almost recognise it as it’s playing even though you might not have heard it before. Listen out for the little snippets of lead line on this track as well as the brass section, this is another example of a band who can not only play well, but play well together.
7 Years Ago comes in next, opening with a simple and slamming guitar line which is sure to get you engaged with what’s going on. Kicking into an almost funky section before letting the track begin properly, there’s once again a lot going on here to keep you listening, the track is layered with different instruments which all combine to form a track which is quite simply massive! It’s almost a shame when the track finishes and you’re launched into final track Wasted. As a finisher to the selection it’s much more raw and basic than a lot of the tracks before it, sounding almost underproduced but allowing this to give it that raw and live edge. The track itself is once again catchy and will soon get you involved in it, sounding almost like Zebrahead through the spat vocals and jumping guitar line before reverting back to what the band do so well. In all, this track seems to sum everything up well as it incorporates everything which comes before it on the playlist, it’s almost like a showcase of the bands skills and abilities!
I never had Wales down as somewhere Ska would come from, but these guys have seemingly proved me wrong. The music they produce is inoffensive and will quite simply allow you to listen, enjoy and then jump around the place like a lunatic! I’d love to hear some more from these guys so that I could offer a fully comprehensive over view of what they do, it strikes me that they’ve undergone quite a journey between their first stuff and their most recent stuff. As a final word, live I imagine these guys are simply awesome – this is pure downright live music, and it’s good!
