Dimitris Kyriakidis
We were recently contacted by Dimitris Kyriakidis about an instrumental guitar track which he’s put together called Air Hunt to see if we could get something posted for him. Ever the fan of any guitar work out there, I seized the chance to check out the track to see what he had on offer. What I didn’t expect was what I was about to hear.
Pounding drums mark the beginning of the track before ushering in a funky bass line, all the time keeping jet engine effects in the back ground over the funky mix. As the guitar comes into being though, wow – this guy can play. The guitar and bass work together to keep the track funky whilst the drums set the pace, sure there’s no vocals but on a track like this the guitar work does all of the talking which is needed. Soaring lead lines melt into intricate picking and tapping sections, all the time keeping everything funky and engaging – if you’re a guitarist then you need to hear this as quite frankly, this is on par with any of the major names in guitar playing I’ve ever encountered. Moving between sections of the track you’re confronted with soothing bass lines, hammering drums and moments where you can’t do anything other than sit with your mouth agape at what you’re hearing – the drum solo mid way through which leads into a bass solo being one of those moments. These guys can’t just play these instruments, they can use them to create a sound which I’ve never come across before – this HAS to be the future of music for me!
Now I’m a huge fan of Dream Theater, but these guys are making me question whether this could be the next better thing. The bass, the drums, the synth and those guitars, oh my god those guitars – it’s just a mix which you can’t help but want to hear more and more of. Petrucci step aside, Malmsteen hang up your strat, Vai take off the glasses and go and have a cup of tea, ladies and gentlemen we have a new player on the scene and given the right opportunities, this is going to be massive.
I suppose I’m left with 2 questions having heard this track – 1). When are you going to produce more as when you do, I want it! 2). Please please please teach me…..as from here on until I can play like this my Ibanez is going to be sitting redundant on the wall hanger, this is something else.
Below you can see a video of what’s coming next as well, but in the meantime, make sure you check this guy out – then just drool over the insanity of what you’re hearing – more please!
