Dirt Box Disco
We were recently sent through details of Dirt Box Disco, a band formed from the malfunction of a terrible musical laboratory experiment – which sounds…well….different! Due to release their debut album, Legends, we’re amongst the first to get to hear the album, which always makes me quite excited! Now this is a band who describe their sound as a combination of Ramones vs. Kiss vs. Rancid vs. Shawaddywaddy, this promises to be one hell of an interesting journey – so what of their music!
Opening with The Other Side Of The Street we’re immediately launched into a punk rock melee of hammering guitar lines, pounding drums and a rumbling bass section, the whole mix forming something which is impossible to resist. The lyrics are spat out over the backing track, adding in a further sense of urgency and power, the whole track forming something which is going to get venues pumping, crowds jumping and a hell of a lot of people singing along with the band. Peepshow continues this theme, once again launching us straight into the track without so much as a hello but once again reassuring us that this is going to be one hell of an awesome ride. Personally, this track stands out as a serious highpoint to me, adding in the sense of melody to combine with the raw power from the guys, it’s a clever mix and one which few bands manage to achieve. This is the sort of track we want to hear from a band like this, and it’s damned good to hear!
Rock n Rolla comes next, once again throwing down into a track full of hooks and moments which are going to convince anyone who might have any doubts left. Despite the all out power the melody is still evident throughout this track, adding in choruses which Kiss would be jealous of, punk moments which could come straight out of The Ramones practice book, and the catchy qualities of pretty much every punk rock band out there, only with more power and determination. I Just Want To Be A Girl comes up next and launches us into an unexpected beginning, full to the brim with ‘nah nah nah’s’ designed to get everyone singing along. Powerful guitar lines soon join the catchy lyrics and once again we’re transported to the realms of solid punk rock, a world where all you want to do is hear the music and have a damned good time. Don’t begin to think this is a joke band though, as Smackhead demonstrates there’s also a serious edge to these guys. The solid punk foundations of Smackhead are clear from the start, demonstrating that when these guys want to , they can craft any sort of track they damn well please. I think that’s half of the appeal of this album if I’m honest, they don’t follow one convention or genre, instead just hammering out tracks which are going to make you sit back and think ‘woah, that was cool’.
I Am Rock n’ Roll retuned us to the realms of stadium rock and anthemic moments, once again launching into a track based on the solid foundations of a heavy riff backed up by soaring lead snippets and the occasional pinch harmonic. This is another track which is surely going to have everyone singing along with the band, even now I’ve found myself singing ‘I am rock n’ roll, you are rock n’ roll’ to myself whilst wandering around the house. It’s almost a shock then when Psycho comes into take the lead, throwing into a track which harks towards the more indie side of rock music, yet still managing to throw in enough power to leave you trembling at the knees. Catchy once again, this is another track which has been crafted for the live scene and will leave you in no doubt that these guys are going to be one to watch. After the indie openings, I Don’t Wanna go Out With You is a return to the more hammering approach, once again demonstrating that this is a band on a mission to make the world sit up and take note. Once again showing where their influences have come from, this track once again stands out as a moment which has the potential to become somewhat of an anthem.
We All Fall Down seems to show off the bands heavier influences, this time opening with a hammering riff and more of those spat lyrics, taking a turn for the harder and heavier. Despite the hard and heavy openings, this is another track full to the brim with hooks and moments designed to make you sit up and take note, another great track in the progression of this album. I Won’t Forget seems to mark a change in the tone of things, this time almost sounding soft after the heavier tracks before yet still managing to pack a punch. Catchy once again, if there’s anyone who can hear this track and then not walk around singing ‘I won’t forget’, then they’re a better man than me! If you’re looking for a track which epitomises the sound of this band then this is a pretty good starting point, it’s got the soaring vocals, the catchy chorus and the moments which are going to make you want to get out to see these guys on the live scene, in all, a great track. Coming to a close, Radio Radio comes into take the lead and once again throws us straight into a catchy melee of anthemic vocals, roaring guitar moments and drums which are going to get you moving whether you’re ready or not.
Closing the album with final tracks Let’s Get Wasted and Dirtbox Days there’s no doubt left in my mind that this band are going to be one to watch, each track once again presenting us with their own unique take on music and how it should be done! Let’s Get Wasted is one which is going to get you singing along and joining in with ‘come on come on come on come on let’s get fucking wasted’, it’s simple yet there’s not a single person who could resist the urge to sing along! Closing with Dirtbox Days there’s almost a sense that this is the final hurrah on the album, a final chance to hear the band and join in for one last time. From start to finish you’ve got catchy tracks, moments which will make you sing along and tracks which push the boundaries of what a lot of people consider to be a relatively simple genre.
Dirt Box Disco originally got in touch with Mel, so she passed them on to me, and I couldn’t be more thankful! This is an album that is going to renew your love for punk, make you want to see these guys on the live scene and make you realise why you listen to music. At times serious, at other times fun and simple, there’s everything on this album that you could possibly want, and it’s that simple. If you’re looking for an album which is going to sound fresh and exciting every time you hear it, then get hold of this – you won’t be disappointed!
