Divisions
We were recently contacted by Reading PA based Divisions, a band who combine post grunge with rock and metal, to form a mix which is impossible to resist. Going on to say that they deliver a positive message about things everyone can relate to, and that they’re known for their explosive and intense live show, these guys seem to be taking the world be storm despite only having formed fully in 2012. The band got in touch letting us know about their tracks on their reverb nation page, also saying they had a video to Dark Days which we should check out, so I figured we’d better see what was going on!
Opening with Back To Life there’s an upbeat and melodic start to things, opening with a hard hitting riff underpinned by a flange effected guitar line, before the whole mix descends into something which is sure to get crowds pumping. As soon as the vocals come in to complete the picture it’s clear that this is a band who understand their goal, understand their music and can form tracks which combine hard and soft with aplomb. Catchy and powerful throughout, this is a track which introduces us to a band but hits home to your inner thoughts, connecting with what you’re thinking and allowing the music to weave its way in to your head, showing that we’re in for one hell of a ride with these guys.
Moving on to Dark Days (check out the video below), the mood changes to a more calming and reflective tone, a soft guitar line leading us into the track as a strings back up the mix, forming the sort of thing which is going to provoke thoughts, sit you back and simply allow you to think about life. The serene opening moments of this track are testament to the bands ability to craft music, and are only outshone by the ensuing riff which follows. Picking up the soft and calming mix and combining it with a powerful yet melodic riff, the music seems to rove between the hard and soft spectrum once again, combining moments of soaring vocal lines with sheer musical craftsmanship. This track is featured on a movie called Shattered, and I think the music is perfectly suited to that style of feature, matching dramatic moments with equally dramatic musical snippets and building up to the crescendo which closes things. To me, this is the standout track from the selection, there’s just something about it which I really connected with, definitely one to check out.
Closing the selection with So Down the band leave on a high, throwing down one more gauntlet to bear witness to and crafting one final raucous mix of hammering guitar lines and pounding backing rhythms. Upbeat and more energetic from the off, there’s a serious mix of different styles going on throughout this track, harking back to the likes of Staind combined with the out there approach of some Incubus stuff to form a sound which is pretty damned unique. What’s most striking on this track is the vocal line, managing to sound soft and harmonic at some moments, whilst at other moments showing there’s a lot of power held there just waiting to be unleashed – it’s a track which leaves you guessing as to what’s going to come next but wanting to know more!
Divisions have got one hell of an accomplished sound, managing to take the key elements of rock and metal to combine them with grunge in a mixing pot, then ending up with a sound they can call their own. The three tracks on offer here showcase their style and demonstrate that there are bands out there who write honest, heartfelt music which is going to connect with people for all of the right reasons. I look forward to seeing what comes next from these guys as I think it’s going to be an interesting journey to watch!
