Dr Freak and Mr Four
Dr Freak and Mr Four were recently sent through to us having released their album Rock N Roll Brotherhood. Originally the singer and bass player of Superhorrorfuck, the guys felt it was time to show off a softer and more melodic side to their music, linking into their former lives. Stating elements of electro-glam rock and even forays into pop, this promises to be quite a journey!
The album itself certainly shows off a range of styles, from the opening of Rock N Roll Brotherhood which sounds almost like a certain famous Chesney Hawkes song (listen to the intro and you’ll understand) before launching into a Twisted Sister style mix of hammering guitar lines and gravelly vocal lines. Masters of Aesthetics follows much the same recipe, opening with electronic sounds to back up the distorted and hammering guitar line which leads the way through the track, there’s a real mix of sounds going on throughout this album but you always know what it is you’re listening to.
Love After Death is a moment on the album which changes things slightly, opening much softer and almost holding a ballad like quality throughout it, it’s a moment which calms everything down and fades out the hard hitting glam rock style of playing of a lot of the other tracks. Farewell to My Muse is much the same sort of track, demonstrating that these guys don’t just do energetic rock anthems, they also do more emotionally charged acoustic tracks, all along keeping things interesting and engaging to make sure you’re listening hard and falling under their spell. Out of the album, this is a track which I highly advise you check out, there’s some seriously powerful elements going on throughout this track!
Moving back towards the more glam style of things, you’ve got tracks like Jumping Again which are going to quite simply destroy venues when they’re played live. Fast and energetic, these are songs designed to get crowds moving, jumping and chanting along with the band. As if to make sure that you’ve lost any doubts, Destination LA holds all of the chunky riffs of a solid rock anthem combined with the fast paced style of old skool punk music. Personally, Destination LA has to be the high point of the album for me, and a track which I know I’ll be returning to time and time again to hear!
By the time the closing moments of Your Words, Your Air, Your Day are upon you, the journey through the album becomes clear. In this track alone there’s moments of rock and euro-pop all combined to form something which you’re going to be pulled into whether you want to or not. As a closing track to the album it almost seems to showcase the skills of the band and the styles they’ve played throughout, it’s a great track for sure and one which I think will get the band some serious recognition if given the right promotion.
In all, what I’ve come across with this album is a pair of guys who are good friends, and write music which they enjoy playing together. The music isn’t offensive and won’t change the world of rock, but what it will do is give you something to enjoy, moments which you’ll remember and tracks which on the live scene are going to get live crowds going mad. This is a band which is built for the live scene for sure, we’ve just got to hope they get over to these shores!
