Emperors - Album Launch
4 piece Perth band formed in 2010. Emperors are Adam Livingston – Vocals, Greg Sanders – Guitars, Zoe James – Bass and Dane Knowles –Drums.
With only one other release EP ‘Sam’ in 2011, this is Emperors debut album ‘Stay Frosty’ the title taken from the military term to stay cool and keep calm.
Recorded at BlackBird Studio’s in Perth and produced by Dave Parkin (Jebadiah) The album was released on Friday 20th April.
The Album launch at Amplifier Perth kicked of the bands national tour on the 5th May. The venue was filled with a combination of new and established Emperor fans for their 45 min set. Over the last 2 weeks the album ‘Stay Frosty’ has received a fair amount of airplay on Triple J and RTR FM. They played 8 tracks off the new album and 3 of their previous releases, successfully rocking the crowd.
Emperors came on stage and meant business from the off. Their live performance was polished and tight, clearly humbled by the turn out and crowd enthusiasm. Considering the album had only been released 2 weeks earlier, the crowd was very familiar with the material, singing along with all their tracks. It was a fabulous start to their tour. Not the most interactive band with the crowd, it was all about the music and not about small talk. For those who are not familiar with they sound, they could be loosely compared with Feeder, for their Rock/Pop type sound, but with a more raw rock edge not unlike the Foo’s. You can definitely hear familiar influences within their tracks, but not enough to render them unoriginal. The band have a several quality tracks to choose from for their next single release, they all have those catchy melodies and grow on you very quickly. Emperors have a huge future and their feet firmly on the ground. If you have the album, you need to see them live and for those who don’t have it already, check out the single ‘Be Ready When I Say Go’ then get the album, the variety of tracks will catch your attention and bring you sing-along rock/pop pleasure.

The first track ‘Ready When I Say Go’ is the highlight of the album. It is rock with a hint of indie ‘brit pop’ style, an instantly likable tune, leaves you wanting to hear more. Followed by ‘Song of the year’ with an even bigger measure of that indie style. ‘I’m Not Dead’ has a 80’s punk energized feel, with stronger melodies, catchy current tune with a hefty hit of nostalgia much like ‘Witch’ that has a Nirvana grunge style influence. ‘Hey Dolly’ is another stand out track, with vocals and lyrics that catch your attention and melody to back it up.
All 10 tracks on the album feel original, fresh and inspired. It is structured with popular beats and baselines, strong emotive guitars, leading the melodies and quality vocals with blended male/female harmonies. The lyrical content is refreshing, their songs are light hearted and interesting whilst avoiding predictable clichés or topical political messages. The band has quoted Smashing Pumpkins as a musical influence and has often been compared. You can hear a more diverse genre influence throughout this album. It deserves to be a hit, strongly recommend that you give this album a spin.
Mel will be at the show at Amplifier Perth to review the bands live performance so stay tuned for further information, and live pics.
