WOLF + BLOODWORKS

The Cellar in Southampton is well known for showcasing diverse music from all sorts of bands and it was metal’s turn to take centre stage in its fine form.
Opening act, Bloodworks were a fine choice to kick the evening of full on metal off. The amazingly brutal vocals and speedy guitar riffs paired with a lot of headbanging from the crowds shows that Bloodworks have the potential to go further within the metal scene. Their sound can be described as a mixture of Behmeoth, in terms of the vocals, and Machine Head with their rapid-fire rhythms. A great live performance from the guys, I can see they will do well.
Swedish metallers, WOLF were up next. I was interested as I watched the stage being set up with their band flags being placed onto the stage. Suddenly, a backing track was heard and WOLF made their way to the stage. Opening with ‘Make Friends’, I could see that they were being received well with the crowd; speaking of which, I really appreciated the way they interacted with fans as bass guitarist, Anders Modd, made his way into the crowd whilst playing. My personal favourite songs during the set were ‘Voodoo’ where vocalist, Niklas Stålvind, got the crowd to sing back to him when performing ‘The Bite’. It was also brilliant to see the band posing for anyone taking photos. Their anthem ‘Speed On’ marked the end of WOLF's fantastic set and made me question why I hadn't seen them before. I really hope to catch them live again soon.
I have already had the chance to see headliners, Evile who performed at Bloodstock earlier this year so it was going to be interesting to see them in a smaller venue. Of course, it was very different this time round meaning a longer setlist, more mosh pits and a lot of stage diving. Opening with ‘Hundred Wrathful Deities’, fans immediately started headbanging, moshing and they have certainly made a name for themselves here in the UK. Additionally, I think it is fair to say that they have become just as popular worldwide in the past couple of years. I thoroughly enjoyed the performance of ‘In Memoriam’ as the mosh pits calmed down, the lights/phones were raised and swayed and it was the way to take a break from all of the energetic metal. Their sound reminded me of Metallica, from a vocal point of view, and could also pick up elements which one might go as far to say it is possible that they are influenced by Slayer.
Closing the show with ‘Schizophrenia’ allowed fans time for one final mosh, a fantastic end to a full-on night of metal!
As a whole, the night was a fantastic metal experience. Every band was enthusiastic and passionate about their music, showing energy as they performed. The atmosphere was very pleasant to be in and it was great to talk the bands after their shows.
