Fahran
We were recently sent through a copy of the debut album from Fahran, a band who describe themselves as a five piece melodic hard rock band from Derbyshire. Having formed in 2006, the band have already been on a hell of a journey, honing their sound and pushing their boundaries to fully develop themselves, ready for this album. Stating that they draw influence from the likes of Alter Bridge, Blackstone Cherry, Iron Maiden, Metallica and Foo Fighters, I figured it was about time we checked things out for ourselves.
Kicking into being with Ascension, things get off to an atmospheric start, initially opening slowly before a soaring lead line comes into lead the way – immediately showing off the melodic roots of the band and setting the scene for what is to follow. Bolstering the mix with synth effects and a rumbling sense of bass, the track continues to build around you, new elements coming in and adding to the mix, growing continuously as it progresses. Silver Scene takes this mix and builds on it further, developing the sound to a whole new place and showing off their more rock roots, showing what a band are capable of doing when they put their mind to it. Fast paced, dirty, funky and the sort of thing which is sure to get people moving, dancing, drinking and loving every moment of it. This is music which has been crafted for the live scene, the sort of thing which will get a venue pumping and everyone wanting to hear more, and the sort of thing I need to get out to check out for myself.
Cynics And Dreamers continues this sound further, keeping things moving at a sensible pace whilst at the same time, managing to create a real sense of power through the elements on offer. Once again forming a sound which is perfectly crafted for the live scene, and the sort of thing which is sure to get people moving from the word go, this is another track which stands these guys out as a band to make sure you check out, a band who understand their abilities and a band who are sure to connect well with everyone who hears them. Stay Alive is yet another example of this, offering up a track which manages to somehow produce a sound which is funky, fun, dirty and firmly rooted in the world of rock. Even going so far as to throw in a catchy chorus, this is a track which has single potential for sure, the sort of thing which fans will want to hear more of, and the sort of thing which will propel the band firmly into the spotlight.
Continuing through the album we’re treated to Ashes, In Our Eyes, Crude Design and Serenade, but it’s when We See Right Through You comes into being that another serious high point is achieved on the record. Fast paced drums combine with roaring guitar lines, urgent vocals, rumbling bass rhythms and a real sense of movement to craft a track which is sure to become a live favourite after one listen. This is the sort of track I was picturing when I read the bio on these guys, and listening to it we’re shown that they’re more than capable of producing it, showing off their skills and crafting something which is going to work its way into your mind and stay there.
Penultimate track Bittersweet History follows on nicely from the previous, once again showing what they’re capable of and crafting something which punches well above the weight of these guys. Catchy, powerful and firmly rooted in the world of classic, melodic, catchy rock, here’s a track that already I want to see live, and one which stands out as one of my personal favourites from the album. It’s only then left to Another Way to close the record, finishing on a slower and softer note yet still managing to pack the track full of hooks, moments which make you sit up, and guitar lines which will have you drooling over what you’re hearing. It’s a fitting close to a quality album, and a moment which sets these guys up nicely for whatever they do next.
I didn’t really know what to expect when I went into this album from Fahran, but what I’ve found is an album which is going to be played time and time again, one which punches above its weight, and one which has the potential to become a classic in the very, very near future. If you’re looking for a new band to discover who are going to reignite your love for music, remind you of what you love about rock music, and get you down to a show, this is them, ladies and gentlemen, I give you Fahran.
