Fields Of Prey
Alley from California based Fields Of Prey recently dropped us a line to let us know about their music and to see what we thought. Having just released their EP ‘Perfect Dark’, produced by Mudrock who is known for his work with Linkin Park, Godsmack and Avenged Sevenfold, these guys seem to be on track to the big time – so I figured it was about time I checked out what the fuss was all about!
Opening with title track Perfect Dark, things immediately take on a distorted and dark approach before throwing in some soaring vocals over the mix to elevate everything. Keeping the vocal line on one track, and the guitars on another, what you end up with here is a track which is both dark yet clean and somehow uplifting at the same time, it’s something pretty special to behold. Relatively slow in pace, there’s a real sense of power behind everything here, showing off the production skills of someone who has worked with big names such as A7X. This is the sort of track you can easily imagine being performed on a festival stage alongside some of the bands peers, it’s got that well produced sound which doesn’t inhibit the bands sound, allowing them to craft a track which you can’t help but just listen to and enjoy.
Light Beauty follows on, opening much dirtier and rock based, the guitar line here is sure to have every guitarist out there reaching for the air guitar and hammering along. Once again the vocals steal the show, almost contrasting the heavy backing track and adding in a cleaned up angelic element to proceedings. What I particularly liked on this track was the contrasting female and male vocals, it creates a further depth which really hammers this one home, matched equally by the soaring guitar lines which pound around the place throughout. Ghosts follows on in much the same style, opening dark once again and basing the intro over a well put together riff and lead line combination. The bass is kept firmly in the mix throughout this track which is sure to have you reaching for that volume up button, just to make sure the neighbours are hearing things as well! Catchy somehow throughout, this is quite possibly my personal favourite track here, there’s just something about it which is both dark and yet clean, energetic and yet laid back – altogether well accomplished.
Closing with Red, the key here seems to be energy – opening fast and making sure you’re firmly on board for the ride. This is the sort of track which you want to see being played live, it’s got that quality which grabs your attention and makes you want to move along with them, it’s sure to get live crowds whipped into a frenzy from the moment it gets going. Keeping everything powerful throughout, this is a hell of a way to end, and leaves you with one thought going through your head – where can I hear more?
Fields Of Prey don’t give a lot away on their FB page, which quite often can be a good thing I think, all too often you can be bombarded with information and it takes away from the music. What you’ve got here is a band who play solid rock music, music which is going to get you out of your seat and loving every second of it, music which is going to restore your faith in the modern world of music! I for one can’t wait to hear more from these guys, and would highly advise you check them out!
