Fire Fall Down
We featured Firefall Down a while back when we were sent through their single for ‘These Wounds’. Now though, we’ve got the full album of the same title, courtesy of Garry at SAN PR, something I’ve been looking forward to since hearing the first single! Due out in May, these ‘sonic missionaries’ from London are out to use the force of music to convey life’s larger messages of sacrifice, truth and love – so I figured it was about time I saw how the album fared!
Opening with Nag-papatrol you’re introduced to proceedings through an odd mixture of orchestral sound effects and radio effects, all leading you into Mr Rockstar to get things going. There’s a seriously funky edge to this track, adopting a punky style approach to things but keeping the melodies at the centre of the mix, the catchy chorus being a moment of testament to this. Catchy, accessible and unpredictable, this is a track which seems to suggest good things to follow! Commissioned carries this theme on, once again opening up with a distorted guitar line before throwing down into another Hoobastank style verse section full of soaring vocals and melodic guitar rhythms. Hitting the ‘speed up’ button, everything seems to up a gear for the chorus and you’re thrown into a surprisingly heavy and fast section, this is music which is going to get you moving whether you want to or not, it’s like The Offspring crossed with Hoobastank…..an unlikely match but it works!
Spread The Love is soon upon as and shows off the bands message in true Firefall Down style, opening with an epic guitar line before breaking everything down to the bass, drums and vocals to really accentuate what’s going on. What’s becoming clear by this point of the album is that the choruses are the key point of each track, they’re catchy and will have you singing along from the off, it’s a cleverly put together recipe which has been done before, but these guys are doing it well. These Wounds which we previously featured (see below) comes next and adds further to the continuity of the album, keeping everything firmly placed on the ‘fun punk rock’ side of things yet adding in their own serious take on things. Eternally on the other hand seems to mark a moment of change in the album with everything breaking down to the base elements once again and slowing down to an Incubus style track, allowing the funky rhythms to speak for themselves without adding in too many elements which are going to confuse things.
I Am The Way is a stark contrast to this, once again launching into a fast paced track full to the brim with guitars, pounding drums, heavy rumbling bass lines and those clean yet powerful vocal lines, it’s a wonderful mix and the guys pull it off with aplomb. As far as highpoints on the album go, this is one of them for me – the message throughout the song oozes with motivation and really keeps you along for the ride regardless of your personal beliefs. Stand Tall is a rather strange moment on the album for me, I don’t know why but there’s something akin to the likes of Primus going on here, it’s got that bass line and syncopated drumming which at first can sound disjointed before the song fully takes form. Give it a few listens and it all falls into place, but on first listen this one caught me a little of guard! Logic and Fallacy on the other hand was an immediate success for me as soon as it rolled off of the production line, full with hammering guitar lines and rolling drums, this is a track which is going to turn anyone from a mere observer into a fan from the word go. Faster, more rock centred and altogether a track which will make you think ‘next single’, this is one to make sure you check out!
Dear Mom and Dad is another of the tracks which I wasn’t too sure about, again there’s nothing wrong with it, but the initial guitar line which leads into it taking full form didn’t seem to match the actual song itself. Once the song is going it’s another great punky-rocky track, but why the odd intro? The chorus is another anthem like mix of catchy vocal lines and musical hooks, so work through the intro and get to the song itself and you won’t go wrong! Deo is another high point on the album and certainly a track I recommend you check out – full of bass rhythms and little lead snippets which are sure to keep you coming back for more! There’s something clever about the structure of this track as well in the way it seems to jump from section to section, never becoming repetitive or anything like that, just forming a track which you’re going to be nodding along to from first listen. This theme seems to be the approach from the band as Fight continues it, once again launching into a solid punk-rock melee of hammering drums and fast paced guitar lines. Throwing in some harmonics to keep things elevated, this is a track which is made for the live scene, and one reason why I have to get out to see these guys!
My Beautiful follows on and once again slows everything down a notch, opening acoustic and emotional so as to really pull you in. This track has to be played loud to fully appreciate it, you just need to listen to the soft guitar line, the roving bass, the soft yet effective drumming and the vocal lines which soar over everything and you’re transported to a different place, a place where you can just sit back and enjoy what you’re hearing, another definite high point on the album. All too soon we’re at the bonus tracks of Ang Verbo and These Wounds, the first being another selection of spoken work in a radio style before finishing things off with an acoustic rendition of These Wounds, a softened up and effective finish to what’s been a pretty awesome journey.
I liked the single from Firefall Down when I first heard it, and I had secretly questioned how they were going to create an album which followed the same themes and kept people engaged and listening. What you’ve got here is evidence of a band who are out to craft music that isn’t a simple entity, it’s something which you don’t hear as such, you feel it. Each track is very different in it’s own way, yet at the same time there’s a theme running through things that you can’t help but feel, so you know it’s the same band all along. What I’m trying to get at is that this is an album which you should get hold of when it comes out as it will help you, it’s uplifting, emotionally charged and full of moments which will do the most basic yet most enjoyable of things – evoke a smile.

Fire Fall Down
Garry from SAN PR recently sent us through details of the new single from London three-piece Fire Fall Down, a band with a sound akin to the likes of Incubus and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. The band is out to use the power of music to convey life’s larger messages of sacrifice, truth and love, calling on experiences such as a drug addiction in the lead singers past. The single, These Wounds, is being released from their debut album (of the same name) and will coincide with a video release, as well as a 150 fest UK-wide tour in the Spring – these guys aren’t afraid of some hard work it seems! Always looking for new sounds, I thought it only right to check out what was on offer.
Opening with pure energy and in your face rock, this track will immediately pull you in and make you want to hear more from these guys. The vocals soar over the distorted backing track, the whole mix forming something which is both catchy and unique, alternating between fast jumpy sections and more broken down sections which almost act as a soothing moment of relaxation. The chorus is key to this track though, it’s catchy and is sure ot have live crowds chanting along with the band on the live scene. I really like the drums throughout the track as well, they switch between relatively simple solid beats, syncopated moments and sections of a rolling double bass which is sure to have you reaching for that volume up button to make sure you don’t miss a single moment. Energetic and uplifting throughout, this is a track which reflects what we set out to do perfectly, it’s a track you need to hear and one which won’t disappoint! Every little element works throughout the song from the contrasting vocal lines, hammering backing music, the lead guitar line, the rolling drums – it’s all there to be heard, bravo guys.
I’m seriously looking forward to hearing the album from these guys when I get hold of a copy, there’s something about the music which you can’t help but love, and this element makes you want to hear more and more. The music is melodic throughout and acts to uplift you from what ever mood you’re in, it’s a triumph. When a band finds their moment like this, it’s a recipe they should stick to – so keep at it lads!
