Fist Full Of Lies
Always good for a band to check out, Garry from SAN PR recently sent through a copy of ‘If It Wasn’t For This I’d Still Have Everything’ from Norwich based, Fist Full Of Lies. This debut EP is set to drop on the 9th of July and promises to be one to make sure you check out, taking influence from the likes of Deaf Havana, Avenged Sevenfold and Alexisonfire. Having been together since 2010, these guys seem set on taking over the UK with their sound, so I figured it only right I check out this debut EP for myself!
Opening with Curses it’s immediately clear that this is going to be a no holds barred record, opening powerful and throwing down into a hammering melee of punk style riffs and more rocked up vocal lines. The sound from these guys is one which seems to combine the key elements of punk with more modern metal, almost creating their own personal genre as the track grows around you. Hammering drums, gravelly vocals, roaring guitar lines and a bass line which roves around in the background, this is one hell of an introduction to a band and suggests good things to follow!
Moving into I Am Jack’s Lingering Regret the mood seems to intensify initially, almost sounding even heavier as it begins before once again returning to the more punk side of the bands roots, still managing to craft a sound which is going to hook you in from the off. There’s a sense of the bands influences here, somehow sounding like a mixture of Alexisonfire and Deaf Havana at times whilst still managing to add in their own personal take on things, keeping the record alive and making you want to hear more just to make sure you’re not dreaming, it’s genuinely hard to believe this is a debut EP! Waiting continues this theme, only this time with a more melodic approach to things. Somehow managing to take their sound and soften it whilst still keeping it powerful, the bassline seems to be the key to this track. Deep and powerful at first it seems to form the basis for the track, then as the track grows it adopts its rightful place to keep everything firmly welded together as one. Not staying soft or overly melodic for long we’re soon launched into another hammering verse section, but it’s the chorus which will make you sit up and take notice. Powerful, catchy and full to the brim with hooks, this is a seriously accomplished track which shows exactly why you need to take note of this release. Personally, this is my favourite track off of the EP – there’s just something I like about it quite simply, no other reason!
Closing with Bitterness Got The Better Of Me there’s one final hurrah on the EP and one last chance to hear the band doing what they do well, crafting another heavy assed mix of punk and rock to leave you wanting to hear just a snippet more. This final track continues the more melodic approach to things, almost acting as testament to the journey the band have gone through, showing why they’re doing what they’re doing and why you need to listen to them. Finishing on a high, it’s once again a struggle to believe that this is a debut EP – I mean it’s a 4 track masterpiece – which is going to be a hard act to follow!
I’ve enjoyed this EP from Fist Full Of Lies, it’s got the right balance of power and melody which will keep you engaged and wanting more. Sure, it’s not the most advanced EP in the world but I don’t think that matters, what matters is you’ve got an EP here which is going to make you come back for more time and time again, and one which suggests we could well be hearing more from Fist Full Of Lies very soon.
