Free Choice Paradigm
As with all fairy tale beginnings, Free Choice Paradigm were formed a long long time ago (2010 to be precise), when Tommy Disfiger got drunk, broke some guys nose and met a lovely lady to spend the night with (aaaahhhhh…..love!). According to the bands bio, during this alcohol fuelled rampage he met a similarly leathered bassist called Calvin, before later meeting a chap called Ben to complete the picture. Then they all lived happily ever after….well…..they still are so in my eyes, that’s good going! Anyhow, enough of me bollocking on, the band got together and in early 2012, signed to Stuck Records before releasing their debut EP, Scourge Of Old Ladies, on April 24th of the same year. The band were lovely enough to drop us a link to their website so we could check out their music for ourselves!
Opening with In Here there’s an immediate punch in the face from an upbeat and punk style riff, the whole mix forming something which is going to get you moving, get you jumping and get you chanting along with the band. The upbeat guitar line combines with the pounding drum line behind the scenes, keeping everything upbeat and to the point throughout, forming the sort of sound which is going to generate excitement and get people listening. Throwing in a guitar solo to make sure you’re still there and paying attention, this track seems to go from strength to strength, all along keeping a real sense of energy running through the backing beat and forcing you to move along – a great introduction to a band for sure!
Changing their style for The Ass In Passive Aggressive, the tone suddenly takes on a more rock style riff, throwing out the sort of thing which is custom made for the live stage. Alternating the vocal styles from chanting to singing, the mix forms something which takes punk and combines it with almost stadium rock, forming something which is catchy and powerful, yet amusing and tongue in cheek at the same time. Before the track had come to a close I found myself chanting along to ‘you are the ass in passive aggressive’, it’s impossible to resist it! Closing with Open Wallet we’re shown another side to the band, the final moments of this EP closing on a more out there style and leaving you questioning what’s going to come after something like this! Starting off with spoken lyrics before moving back towards the more upbeat moments, then back again, this final track is like a journey through the style of music the band are going for, showing that they’re not afraid to try different things and that when they do, they make it work. Catchy once again despite the more out there approach to things, this final track does exactly what it should do, leave you wanting more but knowing that what comes next is going to be an entirely different beast!
What I like about Free Choice Paradigm is that they’re not afraid to try different things, always pushing the boundaries of their music to offer up different sounds, different approaches and evoke different reactions. Throughout the 3 tracks on offer here you’re almost given a showcase of the bands ability and style, yet there’s one over arching sense which runs through all of the tracks – a sense of fun! To me, Free Choice Paradigm sound like a band who enjoy what they’re doing, and do it for that reason – which is going to be the thing which really keeps them going I think!
