Girl Fixer
We were put to Girl Fixer by Mark Sesin who has sent us several bands in the past to check out. Seeing as all of his recommendations have come good so far, I figured it only fair to check these guys out as well.
Opening with Addict, the pace is immediately set fast and raspy, slamming the guitars and chucking a rasp vocal line over the music. Rolling the drums along to set the pace, the bass isn’t as prevalent as I would hope in the mix but this isn’t a massive issue. Breaking down to a slower beat mid way through, this track twists and turns through different sections, all the time keeping the listener engaged by offering up different sections or sounds. Before you know it you’ll be hollering along that you to are an ‘addict’, moving along to the beats and banging your head to the beat.
Casualty Condemn Me takes on a much more pop-punk approach as it kicks in, opening with a catchy guitar riff over dubbed with a twiddly lead line. Bringing the bass into the mix at a much higher level, this track seems much deeper than the tracks which have come before it, pummelling away at your ear drums from the second it begins to the second it fades out. What’s really striking here is the vocals, they’re so harsh at times you struggle to place them above the music, but the whole ensemble works well together and the sound created is a one which you’ll find yourself enjoying within seconds. Stiches continues this theme and once again kicks into an almighty riff to kick things off before bringing in the vocals. Retaining that raw and raspy edge to the vocals and keeping the music as pumping as it began, this track is probably my personal favourite from the selection, harking back to the more original punk elements you would expect from a band like this.
Nation of Sedation follows on from this track, opening with spat vocals behind more crunchy riffs and pounding drums whilst all the time keeping the bass back in the mix to keep things sounding deep – it’s what was missing from the first track I think as it all seems to work now. This track is somehow catchy once again, hooking you in from the outset and not really ever releasing until the track comes to a close. Regret This finishes of the selection from these guys, sounding catchy once again from the outset and using the guitar line to hook you in, this track is once again a punk based track but somehow much more – there’s much rawer elements at work here which make the track even bigger and more complex than you expect, all of which combines together to form a monster which you can’t help but listen to.
Girl Fixer are the sort of band I always hoped to come across when I set out on this journey, a band who play raw downright decent music without adding any frills to it. There’s no extra here, no over the top – just downright dirty rock tinged with punk – and I like it.
