He Who Dares
We were recently contacted by Chris from Young Blood Agency to let us know about He Who Dares, a 6 piece metalcore band straight out of Blackpool who previously went under the name of Season Of Chaos. Formed in 2010, these guys are already going strong, touring the UK and building a name for themselves out on the scene, so when we got a chance to check out their self titled EP, we jumped at the chance to see what was going on!
Opening with James Bond Can’t Kills Zombies we’re immediately launched into a heavy melee of hammering drums, thundering guitar lines and roaring vocals, the mix getting the pits moving from the off and showing why these guys are already making a name for themselves. Despite the all out and heavy approach, there’s also a real sense of melody running through things as the track progresses, moving into a chorus which is going to have crowds chanting along with the band before once again throwing down into a pit of devastation. Adding in a breakdown here and there to full accentuate everything that’s going on, you can tell throughout this track that this is a band who are going to find their true power and strength on the live scene, crafting a sound which is impossible to stay still to and pummelling you from start to finish.
Battle Scars continues this approach, once again throwing down from the off and not allowing you a second to breath. Adding in some intricate lead lines in this track, the whole mix once again oozes with aggressive distortion combined with a sense of melodic power, it’s quite incredible to listen to. The chorus on this track is an anthem in the waiting, matching the melodic heaviness of early KSE but adding in a new dimension, a dimension of originality. As if to continue to raise the bar, Save Yourself once again picks up the pace to take the lead and shows that this is going to be a real force to be reckoned with out on the scene. Faster and more urgent throughout, the hammering guitar lines seem to combine with the bass and form a sludgy and powerful backing to the track which is impossible to resist. To me, this is the sort of music that you’re going to want to see in a dark and sweaty club, the power of the band getting everyone moving and urging you to get into the pit to take part.
Closing with The Liar (it’s a B-Side but hell, it’s still here) there’s another side to the band put on display for consideration, a side which takes that all out heavy approach and adds in a sense of emotional melody. A short track to close things, this may only be a minute or so long but the final moments almost seem to be a lead on to what’s going to follow, hinting that there’s a lot more to come from these guys!
I really like the sound that He Who Dares has gone for, it’s like a newer and more powerful version of Killswitch Engage, but without the arrogance that they developed towards the end. The combination of heavy and melodic has been done well throughout, resulting in an EP which is going to do exactly what it should – get you listening to the band and make you want to find out more. Personally, I’m looking forward to hearing what comes next as, if it’s anything like this EP, it’s going to be pretty damned awesome!
