Hell Within
Metal/Thrash/Hardcore band Hell Within from Lowell were good enough to have a word about checking out some of their music. Having spent two years touring to get the attention of record companies before embarking on countless other tours across the US, I figured it’s about time they got to sit back and relax and let someone else try and help them out!
Opening with God Grant Me Vengeance you can immediately tell that this is a band who have worked their asses off to get where they are now. The rolling drums and roaring vocals all back up the solid guitar riffs, exuding aggression from the outset and making sure that their message is heard. The pace is set fast but this adds further to the heaviness of the track – occasionally breaking down just to hammer home the point. The guitar tone on this track is phenomenal but matches perfectly the contrasting vocals and rolling drum beats, it’s something which really shows that this is a band with some serious experience behind them.
As Deliverance kicks in, the pace is set to a more bouncy beat and the guitars take on an almost Dark Tranquillity approach, matching the haunting vocals throughout. Clean and powerful vocals contrasts against agonising roars, spitting out the lyrics across the already massive mix of music. Relentless is the perfect word to describe this track, it’s full on and will pull you in from the second it begins. As it fades into Lament For The Fallen the pace doesn’t falter for a second. Opening with a NWOBHM style guitar lick you’re suddenly treated to a chunky guitar riff underpinning more of those awesome roaring vocals. Once again the drums almost manage to steal the show, rolling around like a madman behind the mix setting the pace for everything else to follow. More of the contrasting vocals are brought in to ease things slightly before launching back in head first to more rolling drums and soaring guitar lines, honestly believe me when I say that this is epic! Wait until you hear the lead line going on at the end of this track as well, it’s enough to make any guitarist out there jealous.
Assembly Of The Locusts follows on, opening much more sludgy and slow than the tracks which have come before it. Uncompromisingly heavy from the outset, this track seems to describe everything from the band so far in one track. Rolling drums underpin insane guitar lines and force this track onwards, it’s fast paced, in your face and full on from the outset. Again, the drums here match the insanity of the drums creating a track which will appeal to fans of all types of metal. Contrasting vocals add in an extra element of melody and harmony which further develop this track into something which you will go back to again and again. Scars In Oblivion seems to follow on with this trend, once again launching in with pumping guitars but opening with the cleaner vocals this time. The rolling drums set a jumpy pace before launching back into the full on approach which has become so close to my heart since first hearing this band. The double bass on this track made me want to be a drummer, it’s insane and matched only by the dual vocals which are layered over it to create a massive sound. This track is probably my favourite from the selection I’d say as it’s a no holds barred assault on your ear drums from the minute it starts!
Remnants of a Failed Creation opens with more top end on the guitars, once again adding in those rolling drums to make sure that the pace is set fast. Combining the roaring with the cleaned up vocals this track launches at itself, firing contrasts here and there to keep everything new and fresh, it’s madness but works on so many levels. Insanely heavy this track will shake you to your foundations and convert anyone who is not yet sure of the prowess of these guys. As it fades into The Rebirth once again things take on a simpler yet heavier approach and power onwards further. Opening with roared lyrics before kicking back into those rolling drums, roaring guitars and powerful clean vocals. This track demonstrates that this band is able to write tracks which differ from each other, always giving their audience something new to pay attention to. This track also demonstrates why these guys have toured so much, live it must be simply epic. This is a track which is crafted for the live scene, so if you see them playing , get out there, see it and let me know what it’s like.
Moving into Shadows Of Vanity there’s no let up from the fast paced metal unit, rolling drums and more of those awesome riffs take over at an almost Devil Driver pace. Kicking in and never once slowing down, this track is a full on salute to their thrash influences, showing off where they’ve come from and showing that they can produce music which you’ll enjoy whilst wincing a little throughout at the raw energy which it demonstrates. Godspeed To Your Deathbed on the other hand is a full on death metal track – opening with screams and pummelling drums, this track will make you jump if you’re not ready for it. Given the tracks which have come before this one it’s hard to remember sometimes that you’re listening to the same band all the time, they’ve managed to create a sound which is always sounding new and fresh, and this is what makes their music so damned enjoyable to listen to.
Final track Asylum of the Human Predator is another track which opens with the cleaner vocals, everything which is cleaned up in the vocals though is kept heavy in the music. Roaring onwards the drums once again set the pace for the riffing guitars and the selection is brought to a close.
Hell Within are one hell of a band, working their asses off to achieve what they want to achieve it’s clear they’ve developed their own sound over the time they’ve been together. Crafting tracks which are brutally heavy yet somehow melodic in some ways is testament to their musical ability and unity as a group. Based on what they’ve done so far I won’t be surprised when I see these guys playing over here.
