Helldorado
We were recently put onto Helldorado, a band formed in 2001 in Stavanger, Norway, by members of local band The Tramps as a means to move towards a more dark and broad musical landscape than they could before. Going on to win the traditional Norway Battle Of The Bands (ZOOM) and achieving a full tour of Norway as well as gigs in the UK and Germany, the guys started out on the road to recognition with a mini album called Lost Highway. Fast forward through their album ‘The Ballad Of Nora Lee’ to now and the guys are primed to unleash their music world wide with their upcoming album, Bones In The Closet – an album described as ‘Mexican rocked up surf from Norway’ which brings about images of sun, whiskey and blue skies – which sounds cool to me! We were sent through a link to their title track Bones In The Closet to see what we thought, so who was I to refuse!
Creating a sense of desert like soundscapes from the word go, we’re launched into a strange world of twangy guitars and roving bass lines, the sort of thing which is going to get you moving from the off. Ushering in a toned down vocal line to complete the mix, it’s impossible to believe these guys are from Norway as their sound is so ‘Southern states of the US’ in its approach. Laid back yet deep and ominous, the track progresses at a steady speed, building on the power for a chorus which is sure to have you singing along whilst maintaining that sense of ‘down south’ throughout. Even going so far as to throw in some mariachi style brass work, this is a track which is going to surprise, excite and renew your faith in music , the twists and turns keeping you engaged and proving that no matter where you come from, it’s possible to create something special in the world of music.
When I read the write up that Ellie sent through about these guys I formed an idea in my head of what I was in for, and it was nothing like the actual sound. This track from Helldorado is diverse, exciting and surprising all at the same time, presenting something which sounds like it’s from somewhere else whilst displaying their musical ability and understanding throughout. I’ll be looking to check out some more stuff from these guys for sure, definitely a band to make sure you check out.
