Hope Lies Within
Melodic rock band Hope Lies Within from Springfield got in touch this week about some of their tracks. They describe themselves as a group of friends just doing what they love, breaking away from the norm to catch the listeners ear, so let’s see!
Opening with Legends it’s immediately clear that these guys can craft a track. Riffing guitars rove around on top of slamming drums, all backed up by a solid bass line before kicking in with the vocals. Sounding almost syncopated at times, this track is both catchy, raw, refined and heavy at the same time. It’s strikingly catchy throughout as well, creating a sound which makes you want to experience every note of the track as it progresses. Bringing in contrasting vocals at times adds further depth to the already big track, occasionally catching you off guard before hammering their point home with those different layers. Finishing with an epic lead line these guys are showing they know what they’re doing, and doing it well at that.
Solar follows on, opening much more bassy and frantic than the previous track whilst still retaining that melodic approach. Breaking down into raw power through the rolling drums, powerful vocals and slamming guitars, this track is yet another triumph from these guys, setting the bar immediately high. Cries of ‘These days are mine’ at first sound off key but soon work with the music as it progresses, it creates a darker edge to the track which further develops it. Through The Eyes of Trepidation continues the darker approach to music, opening hauntingly with strings and solo vocals telling stories of a bright red mist and watching them die before bringing in some hauntingly clean guitars underpinned with faded distorted riffs. There’s a lot going on in this track already, then everything kicks in fully! Taking on an almost Iron Maiden style approach to riffs the track suddenly speeds up and powers onwards. Still emotionally charged and haunting throughout, this track is quite possibly my personal favourite from the selection, it’s just so massive when you hear it.
The Face Of Deception follows on, opening much brighter and softer than before with acoustic guitars lightly strummed over strings creating a happier yet still big sound. Keeping things simple throughout this track and limiting things to the guitar, vocals and strings, this is one hell of an emotional track from start to finish. By contrast, These Days Are Numbered opens heavy once again, using distorted pumping riffs to power onwards. Backing everything with a solid drum beat and then bringing in those vocals once again, this track seems infinitely far away from the previous track. What I really liked here though was the contrasting vocals and pinch harmonics, the sound created crosses genres and makes you listen even harder to make sure you’re not missing anything.
Final track Too Close To The Sun carries things on in much the same way up to the finish line. Opening with riffs underpinned by a solid drum beat before kicking into a faster paced section which is guaranteed to have the live scene moving along with them. This track seems to summarise everything which has come before it, bringing all of those elements into one track and finishing on a high.
Hope Lies Within are a band which take elements from different influences and create a sound which although similar to other bands, is unique to them. They’ve managed to create hard hitting heavy tracks and soft emotional tracks and link them all together. They can obviously write a track but more than that, they can play a track and play it well. I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about these guys as they’ve got the potential to do something pretty damned special.
