Immension - NEW!
We’ve featured Immension before, so when Garry from SAN PR dropped us a line about their new release, The Enemy Within, I was looking forward to checking out what the chaps had been up to since our last visit. Forged out of influences ranging from Metallica to In Flames and Arch Enemy, this is a band who take the metal genre and make it their own, firmly stamping their own signature sound upon everything they do. With the new EP described as ‘oozing four spanking tracks of galloping metal merged with melodic passages and inter-woven guitar lines’, this sounds like an EP that we can’t afford to miss – so to the music!
Kicking off with title track The Enemy Within we’re thrown into a world of classic metal, a place where duelling guitar lines take the lead, accompanied by a bass heavy rhythm section and sense of melodic power. As the track builds in pace we’re soon launched into a galloping melee of distorted guitar work, hammering drumlines and soaring vocals, demonstrating their influences whilst at the same time managing to make the mix firmly their own. Powerful and in your face, the distorted power of this track powers things up to a new level, whilst the melodic edge manages to keep the track sounding fresh, exciting, and accessible. Verging on the catchy through the chorus section of the track, this is one which pushes the boundaries of metal, once again demonstrating the ability of Immension to take metal and make it their own, kicking the EP off in style for sure.
Continuing this approach into Forevermore we’re once again led through a rolling mix of hammering drum work and guitar lines before the full power of the track is unleashed. With vocals harking towards old school Metallica at times, before unleashing all out roars akin to In Flames at other times, the mix on offer here is one which will appeal to fans of old school metal as well as newer style stuff, managing to balance out the mix with aplomb. Packed with hooks and moments that are sure to ignite pits, this track is a serious stand out point in my opinion, and a moment to make sure you check out. After the blistering guitar solo of the previous track, All That Remains comes as a shock to the system initially, fading things down and slowing them down to an almost ballad like pace. Soft and melodic guitars pave the way for a soaring lead line and heavy riff combo to take the lead, once again demonstrating the level of understanding within the band and presenting a mix that balances heavy and soft with aplomb. Deep and powerful despite the more laid back approach, this is a track that stands out as a serious single contender, and my personal favourite track off of the EP. Catchy, melodic, powerful and packed with hooks that keep you coming back time after time, this is a moment that I think we’re going to be hearing a hell of a lot more of – one not to miss.
It’s only then left for In The Dead Of Winter to close the EP, finishing with another track packed with distortion, aggression and catchy hooks. Soaring guitars pave the way into things, all backed up by those solid drum lines and bass heavy rhythms, before the full force of things is unleashed. Launching into a rolling mix of soaring vocal lines and hammering rhythms, this track packs a punch, demonstrating the full extent of Immensions knowledge and ability, and presenting us with another reason to keep checking back in on these guys. Powerful without going too far, this track may well close the EP, but it showcases the ability and understanding of a band who have grown, developed and matured, resulting in a sound that’s going to hook you in, keep you listening, and keep you coming back for more.
I’ve been impressed by Immension since we first checked them out, but coming back to them this time it’s clear that they’ve been working hard, developing their sound and building on their abilities. This EP is a showcase of their understanding, their ability, and their desire to push their sound to the absolute limit, and it does just that. From start to finish there’s not a moment out of sync, a line that doesn’t match, or melody that doesn’t fit – this is an EP I’ll be coming back to time and time again, and I highly recommend you do the same.

Immension
Garry at SAN PR is a real diamond for sending bands our way to check out, so when he dropped us a line about the new EP from Sheffield based Immension, I was looking forward to checking out what was on offer. Described as flaunting speed slabs of melodic metal and riffs as dense as the basaltic layer, this sounds like an EP which is going to change the way we look at metal in the modern world. Due for release on the 7th of January 2013, this self titled EP may only be 3 tracks long, but it’s an introduction to a band that I for one am looking forward to checking out.
Shadow Of Yourself gets the EP rolling in the style you’d expect, hammering onwards with an intricate lead line accompanied by hammering riffs, the mix forming a sound which is not only punishingly heavy, but also massively deep. Speeding up once the track breaks fully, we’re soon thrust forward at break neck speed and thrown into the sort of melee which is going to get pits moving from front to back and people begging for another taste. Sounding a lot like Bullet For My Valentine in some ways, the track holds an accessible edge, the sort of thing which will hook new fans into the genre whilst still managing to keep the older fans happy that there’s someone still doing heavy, and doing it well. What’s most striking about this track is that the guys have somehow managed to incorporate a sense of catchiness into the mix as well as pummeling riffs, hammering drumlines and even a guitar solo of epic proportions – as an opening track, things are looking damned good.
Lost And Forgotten continues the approach of the EP, once again picking up the pace and thrusting you forwards into a rolling mix of heavy rhythm backing and soaring frontline guitars. The mix is once again something which you can’t help but move to, almost adopting that Devil Driver sense of groove orientated riffs whilst still managing to keep the sound firmly set as their own. That’s the most striking thing about this EP so far, from start to finish there’s a definite stamp on the music which lets you know that it’s Immension you’re listening to, almost like they’ve managed to secure their reputation before even fully setting out on their journey forwards. Rolling drums, pounding bass lines and roaring vocals all abound throughout this track, once again standing up and saying check this out, you’re going to enjoy every second.
Closing with In Vain things finish on a dark and mysterious note, this time softening the tone to get things going and opening up into a track which does away with the hammering guitars initially, allowing you to immerse yourself in the mix as it grows around you. The vocals are haunting which adds a further depth to things, continuing to push the sound of the band without giving away exactly what’s coming next, letting you know that whatever it is it’s going to be good – and then it breaks. Kicking back into the heavier approach once again, although slower this time, the track resumes the distorted journey into things and closes the EP in a manner which should come as no surprise based on what we’ve heard so far – a solid close to a solid EP.
This EP from Immension is one which is going to stand out as a key release to make sure you check out next year, it’s full of moments which will sit you back, moments which will make you take note, and moments which will simply make you want to get down to a show to go mad. As an EP this is good, but as a debut EP this is excellent – and a starting block for a band I think we’re going to be hearing a hell of a lot more from.
