Imp
Imp are a three piece band from and currently situated in Belisce, Croatia. Imp are our first band from mainland Europe and hopefully not the last! Dave actually heard this band on Noize Level Critical Radio and was so impressed, he contacted the band, then they sent through a few tracks for us to listen to. Here’s what i thought of the hard hitting Stoner/Grunge/Metal band from Eastern Europe.
Puppet starts with a cacophony of drums and guitars, straight away the beat attacks you dragging you in with no escape. The lead guitar dies away slightly allowing the vocals to take the lead role, there are hints of Metallica in the voice with some added venom, which makes it all sink in that little bit deeper. I loved the soul searching guitar solo three quarters of the way through which really gave the track a new layer in my eyes. This set up a high voltage finish that fully justified the metal tag associated with the band.
The second track is called Generation Blind, expecting the same bone crunching start as pupper, i prepared myself. However a much calmer guitar solo greeted me, indicating that Imp have more in their locker than they are letting on. The vocals kick in and the slight Metallica resemblance has vanished, i liked the variety that the band showed as a whole, showing that they can adapt and be more unique to other bands in the same genre. The track gradually gets heavier although never peaking to the same heights as Puppet. The vocals are solid, the drumming is rolling and the guitars are slamming, all round good stuff.
Pale is the third and final track we have. Incubus were the first band that came to my head as i heard the opening. A steady and simple guitar line with almost lazy vocals greets you, never the less very effective. However, the curtains soon come down and you're met with a spine tingling duet of drums and guitars, extinguishing the thoughts of Incubus. The second half of the track follows the heavier routine of Puppet, the vocals help to carry the track along and sound perfect despite the changes in tempo.
I was really impressed with Imp, they showed that they are more than a one trick pony and mixed things up well. They kept things relatively simple and the rest just paid off. If these are the type of bands Croatia are spitting out, please keep them coming!
