Imperial Circus
Describing their influences as the likes of Tool and Muse, Imperial Circus describe themselves as Alt-Metal. Having been put onto them by Noize Level Criticals very own Big D I thought I should probably check out what they’ve got on offer!
15 Stiches opens with a sludgy guitar lick and vocals suggesting what is to come. Soon enough the drums kick in and the track takes form accompanied by screaming vocals, you’re forced to sit up and listen to this band. The vocals are reminiscent of Disturbed whilst the music takes on a more sludgy and dirty tone, adding a funky edge in the style it’s played to keep the listener engaged in what’s going on. This track contrasts itself throughout, offering screaming vocals, spat vocals and more conventional style stuff, all combining to create a monster of a track which works on several levels.
Second track, Darkest Side seems to contrast this track again, sounding more like Tool as it kicks in and builds up. The vocals take on a haunting edge as it builds up whilst the guitars continue to drive the track onwards with slamming riffs and pinch harmonics. The chorus is catchy here, sounding almost anthemic you can envisage hoards of people chanting along with the band. This is my personal favourite track from the bands selection on their FB page purely for the way it’s structured, there’s so many elements combined here, all of which come together to create a massive track.
Final track, In The Name Of Hate finishes the selection of tracks in style, offering up the question ‘do you hate me’ as it kicks in. The vocals are a lot harsher on this track which adds more contrasts again to the bands style, from what I’ve heard on these three tracks this band can turn their hand to any style of music they choose! The vocals are cleaned up for the chorus of this track contrasting against the screams which came before it, at first I was unsure of whether it works but after a few listens I think it does, it just comes as a bit of a shock at first!
Imperial Circus are one of those bands who once you hear you’ll want to go and see live. Their music is their own and reflects who they listen to whilst still maintaining a sense of identity throughout. It’s refreshing to see a band writing their songs how they want to and combining all of the elements which they have, it’s something which you don’t come across as often as I’d like to see! Certainly one to check out to see what you think, I’m intrigued by what else these guys have got on offer!
